Nope, haven't smoked one, but I've handled several and wasn't impressed. Nothing terrible, but I wasn't fond of the filter, the stem work seemed a little clunky, the "radiators" felt a bit too gimmick-ey and it just struck me as just another Italian factory-made pipe.
Anyone know who actually makes these pipes?
For the same money I'd rather get a pipe by a North American artisan, but that's just my preference.

As far as I can tell, the early ones were made by Vauen and the later ones were made by the Royal Dutch Pipe Factory.

Iv'e seen them on E-bay, but I never really thought I would like to have one. Just a feeling that I have that they would be a poor smoke.
This was my original post. In my defense, if I have offended anyone, nowhere, do I see where I put them down, other than my personal opinion. Hope no one was offended.

@nsfisher I didn't see where you did either, I just saw you made a guess and framed it as such. No offense taken here.

Thanks Capt my wife was able to find the original box and low and behold the filter thingy was in there. I will give it a try now with it in and see if that makes a difference.
Cheers,

The Stig is right: the original series were made by Oldenkott. Porsche Design later sold the production rights to E. Gubbels & Zn., the parent company of Big Ben. A few changes were made to the original design, making the later series immediately recognizable by their screwed-on metal rim in contrast to the seamless finish of the first edition. I've smoked both the straight and the bent from the first series and didn't find them to be hot smokers. I can't say I have any experience with the later issue, because I feel they're what jpberg thinks of Bo Nordh pipes: overpriced and very ugly. BTW: back in the day, the original Porsches were much more expensive than what a new one would cost you now. As I remember they retailed for something around $600.

If you like the styling of the Porsche pipes, there aren't too many others that have that look. If I owned a Porsche, I suppose that owning at least one branded pipe would be necessary. Porsche owners that smoke pipes? That has to be a pretty small number (perhaps in Europe?).
This UK seller has a decent inventory it appears:

If you want to go estate, you can get an older model for around $150 on ebay if you are patient and good at last second sniping.

Interesting reading all the opinions here. I just purchased this original design made by Oldenkott, Germany, It's due to arrive Thursday, April 10. I'll report back once I restore this one and smoke it.

USA Porsche owner/pipe smoker here. I wouldn't have one of those pipes if you paid me to take it.
If I ever get a Porsche, I'll have to get a Porsche design pipe to Smoke in it. Might never happen though...
If you get a proper Porsche with a proper manual gearbox, not one of the floppy paddle manumatic crap, you would find yourself too occupied and too pumped to properly smoke a pipe in it unless it was parked. With the PDK tranny I can definitely see being complacent enough to enjoy a pipe while driving.

Out of nostalgia, I love manual gear boxes, don't get me wrong, but a dual clutch transmission with paddle shifters (like ZF and others make) is much faster than a manual gear box. That is why all the high end sports cars are using them now (including F1 and other race cars).
