That is a very good article on tongue bite @Shanelktown! It makes complete sense to me now!
Tongue bite is caused by essentially making lye in your mouth... Just like if you made lye by mixing ash and water.
Just with smoking a pipe it is the steam from the tobacco and ash that get mixed to make the lye.

Ha, I smoke in the shower every day. I've never had a problem. I also drink sodas, esepcilly Mountain Dew while smoking occasionally. What is wrong with that? It compliments a tangy acidic Virginia or VaPer very well, IMO.
I also only smoke straight pipes in the car. Bent pipes make the smoke waft in my face more.
I would think that the only things I would avoid would be drenching yourself in gasoline or jumping on a trampoline while smoking. I would have included skydiving, but as I have a friend who says he smokes a cigar on all of his dives that I can only think that a pipe wouldn't be too terrible an idea. I have no plans to jump out of a perfectly good plane anytime soon though.

+1 on smoking bents in the car, but I am actually serious. I once owned a 7" Canadian by Ashton. It was a rainy day so my driver side window was slightly open, just enough to let the smoke come out. For some odd reason, I turned my head hard left and hit the window with the bowl..... 8O ......nothing like gagging on a stem and shank. I've since quit smoking in the car and I have an innate aversion to Canadian and Lumberman shapes.
Don't smoke while bending over to pet your dog... He didn't like getting hit with doddle.

I have only smoked for a few months but would pass on a few things. To avoid tongue bite the best advise I have found is to slow down my draw to the point where it feels like I am barely sipping some extremely hot beverage. Also when i do sip it should be less often than more often. Years ago I smoked cigarettes, and comparatively speaking this practically feels like I am not smoking as there are not great draws and clouds of smoke. Another thing I tried was to keep some water with me through the smoke and regularly have sipped on it. These two things have helped a lot with tongue bite, slowing way down and the water. I still get bite a little at times but not as badly as at first. Also, I can be a pretty intense guy and in the beginning was taking the whole smoking bit way to seriously, getting quite anxious trying to figure it all out and highly frustrated when it seemed to not be working out well. For a while it became a chore and not very relaxing. So for what it is worth don't get too frustrated when it doesn't work cause eventually it probably will.

Back when I first started smoking a pipe when I was in college I had long luxuriant black hair. One day while I was bent over my pipe, earnestly puffing while lighting, a lock tumbled forward into the path of the flame and whoosh! These days it's a barren landscape up there, so no more problem.
