I found this at an Antique store this evening for $20. Had the pipe tamper also in the jar. Jar still had some small flakes of tobacco in the bottom of the glass. The humidity stone in the top has a sweet vanilla smell, so I'm guessing it held aromatics at one time.Felt on bottom is still in good shape. 1000059977.jpg

I picked up this Parker No. 125 table lighter for $20 from the local flea market today. A couple dings in it but it polished up nicely. I dug out the wadding to find the wick and repacked it. The flint looked brand new and it aparked up on the first try. I think it dates from the ‘50s or ‘60s and one site I found said it was made for Parker by Dunhill.

A rarish find, a Captain Smith pipe

I’ve been walking through the flea market at Monastirion (Athens/Greece) last Sunday and among all the stuff I brought home was a Captain Smith pipe. For less than the price of a coffee for an unsmoked pipe, I just couldn’t say no.

At home, after sanitizing it, I filled it to the top with Aus Dem Krater No 5 mixture, and boy it lasted for one hour and 45 minutes! Quite enjoyable, but my head went flying by the end of the smoke.

Cleaning it, and to my surprise, I discovered that it has a moisture trap system similar to that of the Peterson System pipes. It explained a lot the absolutely fine experience of the smoke I had with it.

Looking for information about these pipes, all I found was that they were Greek made pipes in the 70s-80s. This one has a very ugly stem. Actually, it is by far the ugliest pipe I own, but it smokes like a champ, better than most of the expensive ones I have. It has a bowl 51mm deep and 21mm wide at the top, plus it can use a 9mm filter. I tried it with a 9 to 3 mm adapter filterless.

It is not a find of any significant monetary value, but it is certainly special. Here are a couple of photos of it:

Halloween put a damper to garage sales today, but there were a few and I did have a little luck. Bought another one of these lamps. It's like the one I got a while back except this one is in black. It'll make a good backup in case the other one fails. Cost: $2.

Also got a Barnett Banshee compound bow. It's not the greatest but should be good for plinking or, with a blunt tip arrow, to discourage any pesky varments that might come calling. (we have all kind of critters around here because there is a lot of woods. Including coyotyes Like new and cost $5.

The wife got a very nice kitty carrier for those trips to the vet and some kind of ear pieces for her phone... I think they are Blue Tooth??? puffy

There's lots of info here, though nothing for Captain Smith that I found:
I believe they are made in Greece, so best to check local sources/shops.

No info on Pipedia for these too. I found, however, just a short piece of information in a book about Captain Smith pipes:

A well-regarded brand of handmade pipes originating from Greece. They are known for their quality craftsmanship, nice designs, and the use of premium briar wood. Here are some key points about Captain Smith pipes: Founded by Dimitris Kehagias, a skilled pipemaker who started crafting pipes in the 1970s.The brand name Captain Smith was inspired by a British sea captain who was a pipe enthusiast. The workshop continues to produce pipes using traditional methods.even today. Captain Smith pipes are respected among collectors and smokers for their affordability compared to other high-end handmade pipes. Popular in Europe, especially in Germany and France, where Greek pipes have a strong following.

Interesting! I notice you don't say you bought it. I would for 5 or 10 bucks. Went to the doctor today and he told me I should stay away from tobacco. puffy
For a novelty item it is very cool. I was tempted to give it a serious look over but that just leads to trouble haha. That bowl was seriously deep and wide, you would need a friend to light it.
Doctors have opinions.

I found this in a thrift mall, an old Dr. Grabow Grand Duke pot shape with a yellow spade. There's no other stampings on the pipe. Hardly a great find, but for $12 I figured I'd give it some love, and man did it really need it! One of the filthiest pipes I've come across in a long time. The stem was stuck on and it took 12 hours in the freezer plus soaking it in alcohol to get it to come out. It still had a filter stuck inside that was disgusting, but the rest of the pipe wasn't much better. The outside was almost black with dirt and oil etc. But now it's clean and has a natural finish along with its little fills and dings which is ok with me. I'm smoking it now with some Whiskey Biscuit Gravy, probably something similar to what was smoked in it to begin with.
