Just wondering. In this thread, should we post any thing we find that we think might be interesting to other members, or should we only post pipe related stuff? If its only pipe related I won't be on here much... if any... because in all the years I've been garage sailing the only pipe related things I've ever found worth buying were a couple of small pipe racks. Nary a pipe! puffy
I guess I started it with a pipe related slant for the forum, but if you have a white whale thrift and want to share I don't mind.

Went garage saleing this morning and just found a couple of tiddley little things. But then; you see, I have a bedroom that I use when I want to take an afternoon nap or when the wife wants to be up and about and I want to sleep longer. Anyway, I like to keep a small blanket on the bed even in the summer in case my tushey gets cold. The one I had was plain white... boring! So when I found this one, like new for $1, I jumped on it. It should look great on the bed with my Star Wars sheets. puffy

Yesterday I was at the doctors and he told me I should get one of these exercisers you can use at your desk. It's kind of like riding a bike but much more convenient. So, last night I was looking at them on line trying to decide which one to buy. This morning we went out on our weekly garage sailing trip and, low and behold, there is one for sale that's like brand new. I bought it for $10. What are the odds??? I knew that making friends with the Voodoo queen who moved in next door was a good idea.... puffy

I found this in a thrift mall, an old Dr. Grabow Grand Duke pot shape with a yellow spade. There's no other stampings on the pipe. Hardly a great find, but for $12 I figured I'd give it some love, and man did it really need it! One of the filthiest pipes I've come across in a long time. The stem was stuck on and it took 12 hours in the freezer plus soaking it in alcohol to get it to come out. It still had a filter stuck inside that was disgusting, but the rest of the pipe wasn't much better. The outside was almost black with dirt and oil etc. But now it's clean and has a natural finish along with its little fills and dings which is ok with me. I'm smoking it now with some Whiskey Biscuit Gravy, probably something similar to what was smoked in it to begin with.

Nice to see these old Docs in the wild. That's a pretty one. A few months ago I found a Dr. Grabow Starfire 27, unsmoked and in the box! It still had the paper instructions in the bowl but they disintegrated when I tried to get them out. Also had the $5.95 price sticker on the stem!

I found three of these jars for $1 each. They have a little “chalkboard” label right on them. They hold two standard tins of tobacco.

Over the last year, I have been buying stuffed peppers in similar jars and replacing the lids with Ball jar lids. I also bought a roll of similar “chalkboard” labels. This took care of all that in one shot!

I hit up an estate sale today because I saw pipes and pipe racks in the photos.
The pipes are nothing to write home about, mostly Kaywoodies and Yello Bolles (most in fair to poor condition), but the racks are really nice and the price was right.
I've got more storage space for display and something to spend some time on cleaning these up and repairing some stems.

The 4th of July is a killer of garage sales. I checked the internet for sales on Saturday and there was only one listed in a 10 mile radius and it didn't look good.... I stayed home! :( 🇱🇷

Its not a thing in France either.
They do have occasional community group sales.
Typically, the stuff that is interesting is over priced. The French think their used stuff should be 60-70 percent of what it costs new...even if its worn out.
You can find occasional deals in the far and few in between junk shops.

It could be that items which Americans think of as “antique” were made in the 1930s, but what the French think of as “antique“ were made in in the 1830’s. Plus, I’ve never seen a tourist to America in a thrift store here.

A lot has to do with disposable income. The average French person owns significantly less "Stuff" than the average American. They also tend to use things until they are used up. French have less income, non revolving debt and no access to credit cards. In France there is no such thing as a credit score.

Sure people outgrow stuff and things go way out of fashion but its kind of funny....the world is becoming anti "Fast Fashion" because clothing is treated as disposable. Fast fashion from Asia or Italy has long been a thing here. Here they are just called clothes and markets are full of them. It constitues a lot of what people buy and wear.

When people think if France they often think of Paris and Fashion etc...
When you move any distance from the larger cities France becomes one big farm with scattered industry.

Americans tend to have a lot of stuff. It's estimated that the average home has 300,000 items, and some even rent out other places to store even more. That's why thrift stores are an industry. In other countries, people have less stuff and tend to use it more. Garage sales don't exist in Argentina, and that's partly due to security. US-style thrift stores don't exist either. But stores that sell used clothing are called American fairs.
