While browsing an English online pipe shop I noticed that they have new or 'newish' pipes in many of the old classic London pipe makers. I saw Charatan, BBB, Parker, Orlik, GBD and I can't remember what else.

Now I'm under no illusion that these classic pipe houses have been resurrected in all their glory but I'm curious as to what the deal is with them? Presumably someone went along and bought up the names and is putting them out. Does anyone know if there was some group of laid off pipe makers that went back into business making English pipes? Or maybe more likely, somebody is perhaps buying carved stummels from St Claude and finishing them in London? They are marked Made in England or Made in London so I don't think they could be complete counterfeits.

Anyway I am just curious if anyone here knows a little about them. While I couldn't bring myself to pick up a new Charatan (lol) for ~ 60£ I do have a 'Parker' and an 'Orlik' coming my way.

I can partially answer my own question since I've received the pipes.

I got a little slip in the Captain Black saying it was made by Cadogan and showing some of the brands they make.

The CB pipe is an excellent smoker so far I am quite happy with it. The Parker I've left the stinger in and tried it as is. I'm not sure if I'll keep the stinger, I've thrown all the rest away. But the Parker is quite decently made as well for about £45

The Orlik I'm not too happy with the stem, I hate hard acrylic stems but other than that it's a pretty decent pipe for £18 !

I love Britwoods, which constitute more than half of my motley lot of pipes. A lot of those are venerable centenarians.

Family era and pre-Cadogan are much bandied phrases and confer a degree of “desirability”, IF you are bothered by such.

I have modern Britwoods (Ferndown, Blakemar, Ashton, Wilmer) and non-family/Cadogan era pipes which smoke every bit as good as their older kin.

A comparison would be the restored vintage car which would spend most of its days sitting in the garage, while the Toyota does the daily commute.

Horses for courses 😁

The CB has a "Dunhill dot". Lawks! Surely that won't be the case for long.
