Orwell's Names and descriptions of Junior Anti-Porn League and Sayers of Slogans are things I often go back to as often as Gibran

Well my dvd sets (There Will Be Blood & Gangs Of New York) arrived this morn and it seems both are double disc sets. Looks like I have an entertaining weekend ahead :puffy:

Jay.

Jay tell us what you think after you see them. Keep an eye out for the pipe racks in Blood. He smokes a clay in Gangs too.

Dave, I'm half way through TWBB and am quite enjoying it. I keep looking out for your avatar to appear but so far no joy. In fact I've only seen Mr. Plainview smoke cigarettes thus far.
Regards,
Jay.

Problem with that is Orwell was a Socialist, so IMHO was not clued in enough to know he was criticizing his own beliefs.
Or was doing so in order to excuse a lesser form that would inevitably lead to them.
Huxley called it: the weakness of the individual leads to herd behavior, which leads to totalitarianism, not the other way around.

My two cents: I don’t see it as an either/or question. There is ample evidence that it functions in both directions simultaneously.
Also, on the side of the individual, I'd say ignorance and narcissism would be more accurate terms than weakness.

There was a pirated version of this movie in which Mr. Plainview did not smoke a pipe, but only cigarettes. If I recall correctly its title was "There Will Be Butts." :)

Two amazing films butted heads that year and both shared filming locales near Marfa, TX.
The Coen brother's "No Country For Old Men" had to shut down production for one day while Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" filled the horizon with oily smoke from some production scene.
At the time, I was a close follower of Harry Knowles' inside the movies website "Ain't It Cool.com." Somebody reported there was some heavy weight talent baking out there in West Texas and, mirable dictu, months later we've got two of my all time films duking it out for Best Picture.
I don't mean to get your post too far astern, Dave, but both films still hang with me to this day.

Well I finished TWBB last night and thought it a great film though the ending came as something of a surprise.
Dave, I never saw the shot from where your avatar originates...the only time I saw matey with a pipe was when he was holding the bowl and using the stem as a pointer
I was in two minds whether to watch the second disc but I'm so glad I did. That documentary on the oil industry in the 1920's was as entertaining to me as the film. Great stuff!
Regards,
Jay.
