Thanks for posting the Brunno article Storient. I reposted to my Facebook. My kids and neighbors were giving me a hard time about my choice of headware, so I highlighted the line about a proper hat a pipesman wears!

People hate the smell of cigars and cigarettes. But even the most militant anti-smoking people like the smell of a pipe.
I've found this to be very true at work. Of course, we can't smoke indoors, heaven forbid, but outside anywhere is ok and I can recall the disdain on female faces when passing a guy with a Marlboro but I got second look smiles when I was firing up my Nording. Maybe it reminded them of their old man.
Plus we were more disciplined. Today kids get "time out". Woooo.
We got out butt busted all the time either at school or at home. Time out? That's what my Mom took in between a** whoopins'!!

Thanks for all the thoughts guys. I think the Brunno article pretty well summed up my feelings on the subject. Sorry you younger troops missed it. And I guess I will have to read the rules more closely. I challenge any of us to be "a-political" by that definition. I guess it really means be careful what you say because you are sure to offend somebody. PC again.

I was born in 1947. The 50's for me were the best years I could have had for being a kid. Life was so mellow back then. AC ? Yeah, could have used that. All we had was a 10" window fan.
Eisenhower was President. The USA meant greatness to everyone. Sure the wages were ridiculous. But we lived in a house that we bought for $8,000. You could buy a new 1955 Ford for $1400. I loved those 50's vintage cars. Still do.

I just sold my 1950 Chevy truck that I had for 50 years. I dated my sweetie in that 50 Chevy Truck. I have to admit, I cried when I saw it leave with the new owner. That's when I realized I'm getting to be an old man. Little things mean so much to me now. I have lots of sweet memories of the 50's. Spartan's post says it all. Thanks you.

When I started working we were allowed to smoke in the office. People complaining were considered whiners. I sort of miss that. I don't miss the old technology though (except for my Amiga. Loved that device).

Smoking is much better now than it was 50 years ago. 50 years ago I was eight years old and didn't smoke at all.
My knees were better then. Sometimes they ache now.

Nice post, Oldmooner. You have a way of stirring things up and I do enjoy that.
By the way, if your avatar is really you, you have an uncanny resemblance to the late Harve Presnell. (As much as I love the work of William Macy and Steve Buscemi, Harve tore the ass out of "Fargo.")

We didn't have AC in my parents house, until after I moved out in '79, the same year my dad bought a riding lawn mower (dang!). I remember sleeping with my brother in a shared room in the summmer. My dad had an old Army issue floor fan we put between our beds to get an equal share of the air. The fan was like a stool, open to the bottom. How we avoided cutting our feet at night I'll never know. That fan sure wouldn't be allowed these days. We gave the fan to the mission a few weeks ago, I had a hard time loading it on the truck, but we have enough stuff we don't really need........

I began this thread with the intention of discussing the differences in pipe smoking and it morphed into all kinds of stuff. It's like "hearding cats." Man alive! I could talk all day about all the other things I miss about the times I grew up in-good and bad. But I probably would sound biased or political. Example: I never see kids just out enjoying themselves. Everything has to be organized. I rode my bike all over town without helmuts, knee pads, elbow pads, certificates of worthiness, etc. In fact, it did not have fenders. Remember mud up your back? Part of our problem today is that we regulate everything-not just tobacco.

No regrets from myself here on this thread. But, some conversations best done face-to-face.

It's about time we had another get-together at Boswells, might have to try and finangle that in the next few months.
