Like many, I am called more towards the classic/traditional shapes (particularly partially bent or straight billiards and apples as well as some of their derivatives, and princes). I'd rather see the finish be fancy, wild and out there than for the shape to be.
Bulldogs/Rhodesians are about as extreme as I like to see in the shape. Make a stem of bamboo paired with a briar bowl and funky swirled stem color and weird carvings and partial rustication on the bowl in a traditional shape? Cool (maybe). Make a traditional finish with black stem in a Zulu, volcano or some crazy freehand shape? Bleh. And I do know some of these shapes aren't new.
Just personal preference.
There's some freehands though that I have liked. Nording I think makes one that to me, kind of looks like a tulip (I forget the model and don't feel like looking it up). I don't mind that so much as far as the shape is concerned.
