My mom’s side of the family is Sicilian, and before Christmas it was a tradition that all the women in the family would get together at my grandmother’s house and bake traditional Sicilian cookies and these awesome date bars. Miss that.

are these the fig/date bars you guys are talking about?

Like an Italian fig Newton? My mom’s family is from Sicily and Bari. One of my uncles would make these from his grandmothers recipe and passed it down to me. They’re so damn good!

Those too, but the date bars I’m talking about were different. They were like chopped dates and nuts that were mixed in some kind of batter and baked as a sheet and then cut into bars. My great great aunt used to make those. I have no idea what they were called.

My package still hasn't left the USPS international hub in Jamaica, Queens, NYC.
I mailed it 11 days ago. The Jamaica, Queens USPS facility is three hours from house, in bad traffic. Under two hours in the middle of the night, or 4-1/2 hours if you work for USPS and it's a Sunday.

I love those things.
Sunshine Baking used to make something similar, but they were raisin bars.
These look similar:

Here
Well, my resolve lasted about 4 days. Since I will be on the road in celebration of 20 years hitched for the Christmas holiday, I knew I'd likely open my box early. I figured it would be next weekend.

But then, I had to walk by the box. It called to me. It beckoned....

I got some D&R Cockstrong, one of the first burley blends I grooved on about 3 years ago. A no nonsense VaBur with some Orientals. If you like an old fashioned and honest tobacco flavor, I still strongly recommend it. (smoking some right now in a Peterson Tankard!)

There's also a tin of Dunhill Nightcap. My bulk bag from Saltedplug's big sell-off finally went dry, so this is right on time!

To sweeten the pot is a generous sample of McClelland Dark Star, one that I've never tried. And a pack of pipe cleaners to handle the drool generated from eyeballing this pile of goodies!

Thank you, Secret Santa @smittyd ! You rock!
