"I didn’t just want to know about pipes, I wanted to understand them, their place in culture, the stories behind them..."

A dying breed in the age of the quick and the easy.

In the semi-rural NorthEastern USA
when you just throw the bottom leavings of a tin or bag and mix them together you either end up with something sublime and wonderful or horrid. You'll either think man anyone can blend a great tobacco or god it is totally impossible to make a decent tobacco blend. :) bet it was only half as good as the best mix I made. :) (of course I it's better then that I am just being a jerk)

Great story. I've heard of people dumping dottle or left-over tobaccos into one jar and getting some interesting blends that way.
I have a jar labeled "infinity VA". It's all Virginia or Virginia perique.
I lay a portion out to dry and whatever is leftover after packing a bowl, goes in the jar. I've only smoked two bowls out of it, but they were both excellent and each different. I got the idea from bourbon "Infinity Bottles". It's a fun thing that doesn't take a lot of effort.

Dottle goes in the ashtray then trash though.

Very nice read.

I've actually got a pretty decent blend from mistakes of homemade tobacco, all thrown into one jar, and boiled four hours with a nice casing. Believe or not, it's quite enjoyable.

Great article! One of my favorite Pease mixtures is Samarra... a well known author here introduced it to me awhile back and it's grown on me over the years. It's great to hear the back story of this... glad he changed the name to Samarra, I don't think I would have even tried it if he still called it Sublime Porte or Silk Road.
