The Ultimate Pipe Book

I gather Richard Hacker isn't beloved by all pipe smokers, but I enjoyed reading "Rare Smoke" thru my local library. I found his earlier "The Ultimate Pipe Book" on Amazon, used for $10 delivered. The cover is a little worn, but the book is in perfect shape (pages, covers, binding). I thought I saw a thread on this book a few months ago, but darned if I can find it now (might have been "Pipe Dreams"). I'll save it for a winter read.

I haven't tried that book yet. I have found a couple of pipe books at the library, forget the titles though. I plan on getting a few different ones for coffee table books, as well as to read. Right now my only coffee table pipe book is a copy of the Peterson catalogue I made.

The Ultimate Pipe Book is a great read. I had the pleasure of meeting Hacker and having dinner and a long, smoke and bourbon filled night with him and my former employers about 14 years ago. I really like the guy. I know that he rubs some people the wrong way, but I think that he's always had the best of intentions, and that he's a great author with a real passion for the subjects that he writes about.

Let me know how it is. I just finished his The Ultimate Cigar Book, and it was INCREDIBLY informative. The only pipe book I have is The Pipe Book by Alfred Dunhill himself. It's really cool, though just strictly a historical compilation of information regarding the development of the modern pipe from BC to now. (or the 20's that is).
All these books are great, but if you ask me I'd say these smokers' books need to have some more creative titles! :roll:

I also ordered a paperback copy of Rick Newcombe's "Pipe Dreams", I can't resist a good book for under $20....

That is a great book.I've had a copy for years now and often go back to it for a read. :puffpipe:

The Ultimate Pipe Book is a must read for any pipe smoker. You can't take what he says as gospel (his tobacco rating system is about the most ridiculous pipe related thing you'll ever read) but he provides great information. The Ultimate Pipe Video, if you can find it, is hysterical in the same way Plan 9 is - entertaining in its awefulness. Some people should never be put on video without a safety net and Hacker is one of them.

Personally I think the libraries should remove ALL of their books. I mean, all they do is encourage people to read and become an informed citizenry...and NOTHING good can come of that!!

I can get nearly anything via a service called "SAILOR" from my local library's web site. I just find the ISBN number, and request it. It takes a few weeks, but eventually I get it. I usually end up buying most reference books, but only get fiction on loan.
I've taken apart and scanned many auto/bike shop manuals to PDF, than GBC bound (I scarfed an old machine my office was discarding). But no reference books, sorry!....

I just grabbed the highly recommended Carl Ehwas "The Book of Pipes and Tobacoo's" from Amazon, also $15 shipped (Very Good condition, hardback). I will have plenty of winter reading material. Quite a few copies here:

Actually, that is one downside to the older Hacker books. The black & white photo's are too grainy to pick out any details. "Rare Smoke" has some color photos, but a lot of bad b/w pix.

So....stick to Playboy and such for the pix!

Iwas just looking through my copy of Weber's "Guide To Pipes And Pipe Smoking". I bought it in the late 1970's and it is still a fun read. The pipe shape chart alone is worth it.
