Pipe Dreamer and Star Gazer
The True Light

The True Light eludes me;
it escapes me;
it hides from me;
I cannot find it.

Carefully I char
the embers of morning,
slowly and deliberately
in my patiently
packed chamber
of smoky dreams;
harvested and cured
from far away places.

Gently I tamp with pressures
both subtle and sublime
as if opening a door
to a room undiscovered,
unmapped and unknown.

With deliberate resolve
I strike my match
and hold it while it burns
away the impurities
that are part of life’s necessities
until the flame is pure and free.

The ballerina dances, pliés en cloche,
bowing and rising between the flic-flac
of each inhaled breath:
She embraces the pas de deux
between ballerino and ballerina.

And now with resounding thunderous applause,
The full company
makes its entrance,
magnificently taking the stage.
The smoke rises, the embers glow,
ushering in the full banquet
of life’s most elemental flavors;
the necessities that herald peace and happiness:
The True Light.

(Have you found your True Light?)

My "true lights" usually come on the first light. Sometimes second, or more.

The benefits of the two "false and true lights" can be achieved often in the first light, so why waste time?

Yes, you are right. However, I believe all of us at some point have lit our pipe only to suddenly be amazed by something unexpected and special. Perhaps it is because the packing is perfect, the drawl is clear and open, the way the flame lights the tobacco is spot on.... who knows? What happens next, however, is magic. I think that is the "true light". Obviously, the poem is also a metaphor for other things, but above all, the magic that sometimes happens when the unexpected suddenly opens the door.

On occasions, I do use true light especially if chamber is wide. Easier to get even light across the top. Complex blends do better with it.
Tonight I was reminded of the true light as we celebrated with friends - fellow travelers like ourselves. When I came home, I lit up my pipe- and then relit it for good and took in all the wonders the tobacco had to give. The True Light is about patience as much as it is anything. It is also about taking a moment to enjoy the wonders before you and allowing them to open up unchained and unhurried.
