I've joked from time to time about how you may lose a pipe tamper or tool, but you will never lose a pipe nail because they cost about 99 cents. They will follow you home. Now I have gone and lost a willow tamper that was thrown in as a sweetener when my wife gave me a gift card for a Two Cousins pipe rack/tobacco cabinet. I enjoy using it, and it will likely turn up in the clutter eventually, but I will miss it in the meantime. I have Czech tools, a Dr. Grabow folding tool, a Brebbia folding tool, and a new swirl handle tamper from SP, but I now long for my willow tamper, the one that got away.

I hope it turns up for you. Now I’m gonna repeat all the crap my wife tells me when I lose something, and she sees me looking around, *ahem*:
1) Where was the last place you had it?
2) Are you sure you lost it?
3) You probably have too much junk if you can’t keep up with it.
4) I’m sure it will turn up.
5) Did you actually try moving stuff?
?
Of course, all of that is nonsense, and a complete pain in the ass to listen to while I’m hunting whatever it is I lost, except that last one. I’m bad about setting things on the nearest horizontal surface and forgetting about it, and sure as the world, usually what I’m looking for has had something laid on top of it by someone else. Ashamedly, sometimes by me. ?‍♂️

I have never fully lost a tamper, and that is surprising, since I have lost my mind a few years back.
I mean, I have misplaced them, and I have lifted the couch to find a few I forgot I even had, but never has one just completely vanished on me. I had to give up one to the guard when my daughter was in a wreck to get into the hospital to see her, and it was an 18K one with opal... but, that was different.

My current fav is a sterling silver one with a ruby. Sometimes it goes missing from my pocket, but always to end up in my pipebag, under the couch, or just appears again in my pocket after doing laundry. :::knock on wood:::

But, I do seem to leave a trail of golf tees wherever I go when working outside.

You got me all excited about tampers and I bought a bamboo rattray tamper and have lost it already. I’m using a cheap made in Austria pipe nail that I can’t lose.
so I blame you for everything

It's like sunglasses... when I would buy a pair of RayBan sunglasses for $150-200, they immediately vanish, like "poof!" But, if I buy a cheap pair of drug store glasses that suck for protecting my eyes and set crooked on my face, I can't even throw them away. I could be on vacation at Niagara Falls, and throw them off the falls, and a few hours later, someone would bring them to me, and say, "Sir, I saw you lost these, so I fished them out and brought them back to you."

Tampers are one thing I won't spend extra money on. First there are perfectly good tools for a few bucks but the main thing really is how easy it is to misplace or lose one. If I lose my tamper that costs a few bucks no big deal. Though I have two tampers. One came with my most expensive pipe which is a sit down on special occasions pipe so the tamper stays with the pipe. It's nice but I would have never bought it. Just to give you an idea of how serious it is. We need cell phones these days (my job requires us to have one so we can get alerts if there is a disaster or shooter or something like that, oh and also so we can try and see the black bear too) and I refuse to get a smart phone because I don't need an expensive brick when I leave it in my pants pocket.

seriously. Though if you find a pair of cheap glasses that gets you mad compliments you'll lose those in a few days too.
