I think there are several threads within the OP's post.
1. Taking on the persona of General George McClelland, not actually but in the his exhortations for how to smoke the perfect bowl.
He does this over and over.
2. By and by he realizes that he has been long-winded and apologizes, and casts us as collegial pipe smokers who will understand his rambling. Now some of us are and some not.
It seems to me that perhaps the alcohol interfered with the connection that he has sought through his post. He appeals for our connection but keeps both himself and us at such a distance that this cannot occur.
