That seems a myth to me. I smoke a few nose warmers, especially ones by Morgan Pipes. I clench almost exclusively. With the pipe poking out of the side of my mouth, I never seem to have a problem with smoke in my eyes. I find bent pipes worse about this, as the top of the bowl is down lower and allows for drafts to carry the smoke to my eyes. A straight nose warmer never seems to cause that issue. I love them because they make good pocket pipes.

crash, definitely not a myth. A few years ago a member here sent me a nose warmer to try out. I don't remember exactly how short it was but it was short. I smoke inside almost exclusively and I got smoke in my eyes and it was very annoying. The pipe was a Stanwell I believe.

I just picked-up this Amorelli carved apple that is just over 5". That's about the shortest I'll go: for one, lighting a short pipe makes me uncomfortably cross-eyed; two, lighting a short pipe feels hotter, IMO, because of the shorter draft length; and lastly, intermediate lengths are better suited to my appearance.

Lemme try again, my MM/Dagner poker nose-warmer at 4.5". The bowl's pretty big, so I forgot how short it is.

I have a Neptune tomato at 4 3/8" I find shorter pipes better for clenching and I've never had a problem with smoke getting in my eyes.

I know there is no set length of a "nose warmer" pipe. The average height of males in the Netherlands is 1.83m (6ft) while that in the US in about 5'10". Perhaps an average Dutchman will yell a 6" pipe is too short for him.
I have been trying to look for some vintage photo of early workers smoking nose warmer pipes. What I found so far are factory workers, rail workers, etc all smoked pipes with long stems, hanging out far away from their faces. There is this look of smoking a typical nose warmer where if the pipe is clenched on the side, the bowl of the pipe almost touches one's cheek - unmistakably that is a nose warmer pipe. I remember I came across a few nose warmer vintage photo but is now nowhere to be found. In my eyes, pipes that are not chubby enough and that are much more that 4" in length - they fall into the normal pipes range.

Short pipes get smoke in my eyes and sometimes nose. No matter the length of the pipe, reading with the book on my lap can get smoky. It's like a loop,: I get irritated by the smoke, and this repeats. Sometimes I don't get in that loop, sometimes I do.

Nosewarmers put me off for two reasons: I'm afraid they'll smoke to hot and singe my mouth, and I just don't care for their stubby shape/aesthetics.
I do have a 3.5" cob, though; but that's my 'desk pipe': its meant to sit on my desk, never to be smoked, useful only for me to practice my draught/sipping.

I guess I have the shortest one, but size doesn't matter, right? This 30 gr (1.06 oz), 3" long pipe is a Carmette pipe made by our forum member clickklick. It smokes amazingly well and I had no problem of smoke getting in my eyes.

Passatore Pico, 110mm. The nose warmers are the only pipe I find I can tolerate a 9mm filter. Still seem to get most of the flavour through due to the short proximity from bowl to mouth.

This Tyler Huckfelt nosehorn is the my shortest pipe...

About 3 3/8" in length and 2" tall. It's a fantastic pipe for clenching while I'm out trekking and playing with the dog. No problems at all with smoke getting in my face, but I'd probably be a little worried about lighting it if I had a beard.

Never felt that. In fact, a few years ago somebody posted a test with nosewarmers and recorded temperatures. No hotter than any other pipe.
