By the way, isn't this pipe the one sometimes referred to as the "author's pipe"? If so, does anybody know why?
It's just the name of the shape. There are other manufacturers who do an Author shape (though there's some crossover with the Prince and Apple shapes in certain catalogues), but Savinelli (and their Rossi sub-brand) are the most prolific.
I bought my first one (a Rossi 8320) as a reward for actually sitting down and writing - I only allow myself to smoke that particular pipe if I'm actively engaged in writing. This has worked relatively well when the weather is good, as I can sit out back with my laptop or a notebook (an actual paper one) and puff away. Not so much when it's snowing, however.
So I picked up another (in the Vittoria rusticated finish) for non-writing smoking time...

Right on Daniel! I've thought about picking up another one already as I haven't touched my other pipes since the 320 arrived. Not sure where I would want to go after the spring model though. I really like natural or raw pipes and the noce (?) finish really twiddles my dials. We'll see :)
Phred....sorry for any contributions this thread may have made toward weakening your will power! Be strong ol' boy and use the new pipe inspirationally.

seacaptain, that's a beauty for sure and with a lovely matching tamper. Almost fell out of my chair though when I peeked at the price.

Thanks for pointing that out as I've never seen a 3 star. And the price is so reasonable. I have an estate 320 GDO no star that's fantastic.

I am pretty sure my next pipe is going to be a 320. I already know it is not going to be that 3 star gem. My wife thinks they are fat and ugly. Hang on... I cannot be sure she was looking at the picture of the pipe when she said that...
I am tossing up between the Marron Glace and Tundra lines but who knows what I might end up picking.

What's in a stamp?
It says "hand made" but that pipe is drilled and cut to nearly the same specifications and dimensions as mine. There is literally an 0.8mm deviation in bowl depth...and that is it. I'm willing to accept that I may be a heathen, but I don't think that stain is doing much to highlight the grain. I guess, meh...
This is the pipe I thought you were going to post! The true King of 320's

I had an issue with my 320 that our own Rcstan helped me to resolve after which I popped it out for the first time since the winter. Still a smoking machine and a delight of a pipe on all fronts.
I still give this pipe my highest recommendation and think it should be standard issue for folks that: #1 like to smoke rich, full blends, #2 want a "top shelf" smoke at "house" prices.

Gloucesterman, I like your 320. Is that technically a military mount? If I were in the market for another 320, I would get one with this stem.

"And in fact, you've got 'Algerian Briar' stamped down the side of your pipes... And the fact that I've got 'Savinelli.. 3.. 2.. Oh... stamped down the side of mine."

Seriously, though. Over time I've been trending to smaller and smaller pipes. A while back I was working the tables at the TAPS show and noticed a Spring 320 we'd brought. It had a little fill right where the shank meets the bowl in that typical reddish fill color. Aside from that, though, the grain was unreal. I've never seen ring grain presented so clearly on a smooth pipe. I wish my patrons did more sandblasting. I can only imagine what an amazing piece this would have been with a good blast and a nice dark stain. On that note, though, it would have ended up a much more expensive pipe.

I am drawn to the shape, but I prefer nosewarmers. Is there short/small 320? Thanks in advance.

I was thinking about getting Mr. Brog, but looks like 320 will be my next pipe. Hopefully for X-mas.
