On a whim, I decided to try a couple of Author shaped pipes and take advantage of tobaccopipes.com 15% off sale which ends today. I ordered two Rossi Authors, a Notte 320 and 321 to try out, if I like them I'll move up to the higher grade Savinelli pipes. I've read through several of the old Rossi pipe threads and have a pretty good idea of what I'm buying. Have you enjoyed yours? Any tips or tricks to smoking them? I've always smoked small to medium bowl billiards and I understand these are big wide bowl pipes and in a way I'm looking forward to how burleys might smoke in them.

Have any of you guys ever smoke burley in one? I see a lot of people use them for English and Virginia blends, but I'm primarily a burley smoker and hope they don't disappoint. Anyway, any recommendations, suggestions or advice will be much appreciated. Please feel free to share your experience owning and smoking them. Pro or Con. Thanks again.

Rossi pipes do well for me, a prince and a yacht. Broad bowls do fine with burley, and if you enjoy some of the burley blends with several condimental tobaccos, a broad bowl spreads out the ember and gives you a full scale of flavors. But even if you just want some Sir Walter Raleigh or Amphora Burley, the Rossi 320 will be a good pipe.

I’m a fan of Rossi, and have a few of their pipes. They smoke as well as my Savinelli pipes. I’m confident that you will not be disappointed.

A little history:

“Fabbrica di Pipe di Radica Rossi was founded in 1886 in Barasso, Italy, by Ferdinando Rossi and was considered to be the world's largest manufacturer of tobacco pipes in the early 1900's. Sadly, the factory was shuttered for a myriad of reasons just shy of its 100th anniversary. Savinelli revived the Rossi brand due in part to a longstanding friendship between Ferdinando Rossi and Achille Savinelli, and has created numerous affordable, no-frills Rossi-branded pipe series manufactured with the quality you expect from Savinelli.”

My Rossi authors came in today and they are really nice looking pipes, passed my inspection with flying colors. I ran a couple of bowls of Carter Hall through them and they smoked okay, I prefer cobs for burley blends. I'll find something to smoke in them down the road, for now they have been cleaned, boxed and put up. They did have a nice hand feel but the bits are terrible and definitely not made for clenching. But I do like them, they are a damn nice pipe for $64 bucks. Cobs and burley reign!

Yeah, you definitely don't clench a 320. No problem for me as I don't clench.

Try some rubber pipe tips. Might make them more comfortable.

I'd suggest you smoke the heck out of them for the next few weeks. All 5 of the smooth Rossi pipes I've had have had the finish bubble, some more than others. You may want to exchange them if they bubble real bad.
Mine have also tended to smoke bitter, so I use them for burleys. I really like the 320 shape, sturdy and compact for carrying.

My Rossi 320 is a Vittoria. So, it's rusticated and posed no bubbling issue. It also smokes just fine.

A few years ago, my 320 started having bubbles on the finish. So I took the finish off. It still smokes great.

I have two Rossi's, a full bent and a poker notte. The full bent smokes great, although the bit is a little wide for my liking. The notte always smoked hot and acrid, could never get the hang of that pipe.

Interesting. I have a Rossi (315 prince) and it too smokes bitter/ acrid. I love the look and the price, but figure it will take longer to break in.

I am a big fan of Savinelli and have had no issues with any others in thier line.

Mine also smokes bitter. I even tried removing the bowl coating but no difference. I tried smoking strong tobaccos in it but the awful taste even overpowered them. I‘ve owned hundreds of pipes and this one is the only one to exhibit this trait. After reading others reviews of these pipes I figured that I just got a lemon. Glad I read this thread to find out I’m not the only one this has happened to. My guess is that some of the Rossi pipes are made with cheap briar that was not cured properly.
