I saw an older fellow (well, older than me, anyway) smoking a straight billiard the other day at a shopping center. Unfortunately, he was headed in a different direction than I was, and I had no opportunity to find out what he was smoking.

I have a good friend who smokes a Peterson pipe, he lives in my city, Red Deer, Alberta, and he got me interested in pipe smoking. I have seen two other people in the city, last summer, smoking a pipe, both downtown walking near our courthouse & casino that we have in the area. Other than that I have not seen other pipe smokers although I know there are some around.
We actually own a "swamp cooler" and they work pretty well when it is hot outside. Bought it about 5 years ago from the local Costco and it is kinda the poor man's air conditioner.

I now have a couple of guys to smoke my pipes with, one is Zack from this site and the other is a local guy that Zack met on facebook. The guy Zack met has another couple of guys we are going to get together with so we might be starting up a pipe club soon.
Before this I had no one to smoke my pipe with but would see people on occasion smoking their pipes. I had a neighbor( just moved) 3 doors down who smoked, and I see people from time to time smoking on the streets. Living in Florida where the population is older, the odds of seeing guys smoking is greater.

Me and my friend, who also live in Red Deer, smoke pipes. And I am 100% sure that wasn't us. So that means there are at least 6 pipers in this city. By my calculations, almost 0.007% of Red Deerians smoke a pipe. :puffpipe:

If pipe smoking is such a rare performance, it occurs to me that maybe I should buy a large tent or small

trailer and go around to the county fairs and charge a buck to come in and see the amazing pipe smoker.

He'll select the pipe, he'll pack the bowl, he'll start the fire, he'll encircle you with the rings of vapor!

Step right up, it will amaze and astonish you, from the days of your great grandfather. It's only a dollar,

and the show beings in a few minutes. Step right up!

I think I have seen one person in a truck in the suburb I live in, a big guy in a disel pick-up I think it was a churchwarden. I keep my eye out for him. Since I am in a pipe club I have actually smoked with up to eight other people. But other than that I have seen very few smoke a Pipe I can remember.
The B&M that lostandfound is refering to is the Tobacco Bowl, I hope. A about 5 years ago when I was in college there they always had grabows and cobs hanging on the wall, no idea if they had other pipe tobacco there from what I can remember.

Someone in my neighbourhood smokes a pipe, as over the years I've smelled an aromatic coming from...somewhere, but I've never actually seen them. Little do they know their nickname is the Yeti.

I'm going to miss being in college surrounded by pipe smokers... I don't know if the higher percentage of collegiate smokers will translate into more puffers in general or not. I've already seen one friend give it up entirely, two smoke rarely (though to be fair, girlfriends are a factor with both), and others are the type I could see giving up on it after school. A few are avid pipers though, so maybe it's not as bad as it seems, plus the fact that I know more than I can count by hand is a great sign regardless.

But yes, as far as the OP, I do not know many pipe smokers outside of college, and only one under fifty.

Sadly I know not a single pipe smoker. I have tried, unsuccessfully, to convert a cigar smoking friend.
Only one time have I ever even seen another pipe smoker: an old fella ahead of me at the feed store with a cob stuffed into his back pocket.
I know they must be out there though because there are tubs of OTCs down at the local smoke shops and even in one of the grocery stores.
But I'm thinking of heading over to the Chattanooga pipe show next month. So hopefully I'll meet a few.

I have one good pipe smoker friend, who happens to be a blind composer of electronic and contemporary

music. He has a great collection of briar and Meerschaum pipes. This guy hikes in the mountains, bikes

on a tandem, runs, hikes around the city on his own. He's one of the best read people I know, using an

electronic brail device. You don't help him out; you struggle to keep up. But I think he was really pleased

when I said I smoked a pipe. It gave me some cred.

Then He spoke many things to them in parables, saying: “Behold, a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell by the wayside; and the birds came and devoured them. Some fell on stony places, where they did not have much earth; and they immediately sprang up because they had no depth of earth. But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked them. But others fell on good ground and yielded a crop: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. -- Matthew 13:3 - 8

I've never seen a swamp cooler either.

As for pipe smokers I've seen several around town and on occasion I'll strike up a conversation with them. I have a few buddies that are pipe smokers as well and we try to get together every so often to enjoy a smoke. Plus I know all you guys as well as a lot of pipe smokers from the pipe community on YouTube.
On August 31, 2013 I'm hosting the NW Pipe Conference. There will be lots of pipe smokers there! :puffy:

Go check out the events section.

I'm new here, so feel free to ignore me; however, I know about a dozen pipe smokers. Part of that is having three others in my family and part of that is that I spent much of my 20's in and around coffee shops.
I can say that my cigar smoking friends greatly outnumber my pipe smoking ones and has a larger percentage of females (0% in my pipe smoking community, about 10-15% in my cigar smoking).
I think that the rarity of pipe smokers is true, but I would guess that you simply see less of them smoking in public as it is a fast paced society and a slow paced prep and burn that fits well with the casual, around-the-house/backyard/woodshop smoker.
Unless I am meeting someone at my local cigar shop or at the rare outdoor bar where smoking is allowed and I'll be there a while, you won't find me smoking my pipe outside of my home or family's farm.

I don't personally know any other pipe smokers in my area but there are a few, in fact, in the last couple of years I've seen a big increase in the number of folks smoking pipes in the area (Manchester) although there still aren't many of us.

I rarely see anyone smoking a pipe but I am doing my best to bring it back. At 43 I am too old to seem hip but not old enough to look like I have been doing in my whole life. I sort of stick out like a turd in a punchbowl but what the heck. My Dad smoked a pipe and they have a folk art appeal to me. I am learning a ton from this site and you all seem to be reasonable people. I'm sticking with cheap estate pipes until I gain a greater appreciation for the sport.

I have a few friends who smoke, one only smokes if I'm around and the other three just buy the cheapest Aro they can find and refuse not to use a torch lighter because its cool. I hate to be judgmental but I don't really consider them pipe smokers. What pipe man turns down a chance to sample 2012 Christmas cheer or any hearth and Holmes blends?!?

I think since I started smoking a pipe,about 2 years ago, I've noticed 3 others, mostly above 50.
