I found a box in my mailbox this afternoon...the Professor had paid a permanent visit. It's a fine looking pipe with a real nice boxx and beautiful sock but two questions. It came with one of those filters. Can it be smoked without it and if not where would I buy an adapter? Secondly, the silver band is a bid tarnished. What might be a good product to make it shine again.
I can't wait to put some Hafling's Leaf in it and give her a try soon.

Nice Pete colcolt -Congrats. I'd smoke the filter a bowl or two then can it. Probably don't need one in place to smoke ok. On the band I use a metal polish called Simichrome. It puts an intense shine on most metals in about 30 seconds. You can also try toothpaste and a little elbow grease. Enjoy that new Pete its a beauty.

Yep, I'm dying to try it out so I think I'll mosey out on the deck and try it out with the filter. I think I've seen adapters somewhere but can't recall where...maybe a Google search.
I've got some Mother's Mag polish I use on pistols now and then but don't know how it would work with the band. I think I'll take a few pics of it. :D

colcolt, I would definitely can the filter, I love the way my filtered pipes smoke with out them. The way I clean the silver on my pipes is to take one of those white miracle erasers and just rub it good, polishes them up real nice.

Well, I've tried it with and without the filter now and without it there seems to be a need of more resistance, so to speak. It actually seemed to smoke better with the filter. Looks like I may need to search for an adapter as I don't care for filters but it smokes like it needs something there in that big hole.
Here's a couple of pics I took late this afternoon.

Checking SmokingPipes.com, I believe they sell the filters. Yes, that hole would be too big without something to constrict it to a normal draw.
What a lovely shape, I love the tapered stem and the fishtail.

I didn't like the effect without the filter. It felt like sucking through a half inch straw but don't care for the filters. I did order a couple Vauen adapters from Amazon so, that should make a difference. Meanwhile, I'll smoke it once more with the filter. I don't think using it twice will matter much.
The fishtail stem was another feature that drew me to it. I don't mind the P-lip as my 307 has it but, actually I prefer the fishtail.

I received two Vauen filter adapters today and man what a difference that makes in this pipe. I put one in, loaded it up with MV-1000 and it smoked beautifully. Very easy draw unlike with the filter and much better than without any filter at all. I think I made a good choice with the Professor and it's earning a place in my heart. It has turned me into a clincher...at least with this one.

I was told by Peterson that a product called Goddards Silver Polish(the liquid, not the cloth) was what they used. I think you can buy it locally at some Wal-Mart. That's what I'm going to get.

Great pipe, Sherlock Holmes series are great smokers. I think you will like to try Sherlock Holmes Dr. Watson, it is close to The Professor, with bigger and deeper bowl, I have one with gold hallmarked, really fantastic smoker. To polish your silver band, you can use damp cloth in limon syrup and rub the band slowly.

That's a beautiful pipe colcolt! I'm with you on the fishtail bit. Had one p-lip and it just

never lined-up with my teeth for some reason.

I did order the Watson not long ago and in fact it should be here either tomorrow or Monday. Takes a while coming from the UK. I'm still on the fence about the P-lip. The only one I have is the 307 which is a superb pipe and one of my best smokers but if I had my "druthers" it would have been with the fishtail.

There are a lot of guys that swear by the P-lip.... It just doesn't fit the

configuration of my teeth. I made the one I had into a fishtail with a dremel

and jewelers files.

Don't forget nose grease and a soft rag for cleaning silver works a treat.

Nose grease? Think I'll pass on that one. With my luck it would turn it green.
