I had a nearly Identical pipe that was stamped simply

Straight
Grain

No COM or maker.

I understand that’s a Peterson 999 shape, which Pete probably didn’t invent just sold the most of.

My pipe is an extraordinary specimen of briar. One of many thousands.

They wanted to make the bowl as big as they could, and the shank as long as the grain allowed.

Those fat, short chubbies were dictated by the grain.

With each whisker they removed there was a risk of a pit.

The Marxman stamp is deep and normal.

But they used a light hand on the straight grain stamp. A mistake there would have ruined a perfect straight grain.

Any master carver can duplicate my pipe, today, if they have the briar.

Ruminations on the “why” only briar from the rim of the Mediterranean has been the only choice for fine pipes for over 175 years.

The best is beautiful, like my Marxman straight grain. Men love pretty things. Often it causes our downfall, but we can’t help it.

Something about genuine briar acts as a heat insulator. This one has extreme insulation properties. It barely gets warm when smoking.

And, when the smoke penetrates the wood and returns the briar imparts a pleasant taste to the smoke. My straight grain is a dynamite smoker, typical of pre 54 Marxman pipes of all sizes and grades.

Poverty, or rather avoiding the poor house, is why all pipes are not Marxman straight grains.:)
