I often drink RC or Coke and sometimes Pepsi with my pipe. I know it's kinda frowned upon, but i've had no problems myself. I think I prefer coffee over anything else, sometimes tea, but I'm totally a cola drinker.

I found one that didn't work, a hoppy beer with an aro. Blech.
Really should have known better...

oklansas, as the French say, chacun a son gout -- or something French.
If I ever run out of Scotch, and there's no more Irish whiskey in the house, and the coffee maker stops working, and the city has turned off the water - - - then - - - only then, might I see if I think you're right.

For every failure there is a success...
I found an odd one that works (my continued willingness to drink anything and everything while puffing on my Mr. Brog #14), McB Navy Flake with Instant Beverage Ginger- honey Crystals (hot beverage). The spiciness of ginger and the bit of sweet from honey really brings out the rum flavors in the flake.
The journey of odd beverages continues!

I absolutely loath diet drinks. The after taste IMO is horrible. But I found if I am forced by circumstances to have one a squeeze of lemon juice in the diet coke makes it passable, as least no terrible after taste.

Aspertain - look it up. Diet pop doesn't look as good after you find out what it is. Get a Soda Stream - they don't use the crap in their diet drinks.

Never could "do" the flavor of diet soft drinks. Taste like water with something bad in it. Used to

do cola drinks in the summer, really cold. But finally gave that up. I share the concern about

artificial sweeteners. May have some connection with obesity epidemic, in my opinion. For a

drink with a pipe -- I like hot tea green or black, cold unsweetened iced tea, wine preferably red,

coffee which I take with a little milk, or iced water with lemon. With bourbon, I just like bourbon.

For me, the best beverages to go with a pipe are tea or plain old water. I smoke a lot of Virginia blends, and I find coffee can muddy up the taste some. I prefer coffee with Burleys or Englishes. Tea and water let me taste more of the nuances of the tobacco.

A physician I talks with specifically recommended not drinking alcohol while smoking. I have found a Coke Zero Vanilla to be a great companion to a pipe, especially when smoking non-aros. The sweet, crisp, cool soda is a nice splash on the palate.

Any " diet " soda is one of the highest poisons you can put in your body.

All artifice sweetners have a very dark side indeed if you look into what they really are.

They are strongly not advised ever.

As pipe smokers we are accosted daily by how unhealthy our habit/hobby is but the one thing I respect is that we all make decisions for ourselves based on the information provided and our personal satisfaction. Risk versus reward if you will. Having said that, I had occasion to share a drink and a conversation with the head of bio-chemistry at University of Toronto last New Years Eve. The conversation covered various topics but one of the most interesting was the chemical composition and history of Aspartame and its chemical brothers branded under various sweetener names. I urge anyone who drinks diet colas or diet drinks in general to do their due diligence prior to putting this chemical in your body. The doctor that I spoke to said she is amazed that a food additive can be so poison and still get approval and even alluded to the fact that there was many paid off to get FDA approval. I am not political, I have enough trouble just keeping my own life straight but given her stature and credentials I believe that it begs further research and study to be an informed consumer.

I made the switch from 'regular' to 'diet' some time ago for the simple reason that a 12 oz. can of 'regular' contains no less than 1/4 cup of sugar ... making the switch helped me to shed some unwanted LBS.
The bottom line fact of the matter is that the so-called 'obesity epidemic' is due to two primary causes ... one, a change in the definition of what is considered 'obese' (forget body fat ratios, this definition goes back decades to a weight/height ratio) and two, we, in this country, each consume on average approx. 25 lbs of sugar per year as compared to our ancestors of a century ago who were consuming about 1/10 of that amount ... throw in all the additional starches we eat (remember, the body converts starch to sugar) and then ask yourself why we weigh more than our grandfathers and their fathers did ...
That said, my drink of choice is a diet Pepsi rather than a Coke ... and I'm on board with it being a good accompaniment to a smoke.

Black Assam tea for me. Just like Joshua Pitt, Sherlock Holme's young protege. Or perhaps a cup of cold black coffee. I stay away from anything that comes in a can.

Diet Coke works for me also, but I like Pepsi better. When I smoke Virgina or VaPer blends, I find that a cool glass of kerosene works best for me, but when I smoke Burley based blends, a hot cup of diesel fuel works much better for cleansing my palate. I find gasoline much to harsh for any occasion. :puffy:

I almost exclusively drink tap water while smoking. I may, on occasion, drink a sugar-y drink but only when I'm smoking a high Vitamin-N blend so I don't get the "spins". I can't stand artificial sweeteners, so any diet drink would be out for me. As for toxicity of artificial sweeteners, I've never looked into it, and don't really care to. Not something I'll partake in.
