On my lunch break, started to think about the Moretti pipe and the leather pouch of Boswell's Piper's Pleasure sitting in the the center console of my car. It made me wish I had a job that let me smoke as I worked. I feel like I would be much more productive. If you read my user name, then you'd likely figure I was a psychologist (I am). I am a school psychologist actually. I love the job, but they tend to frown on tobacco. Ah well.
So what do you all do for a living? Do you get to smoke at work?

Back when I stated working, I had a big ashtray on my desk!
Now, smokers are discriminated against in the work place.

I can not only smoke at the office, but I'm encouraged by my boss to do so. I can drink beer at my desk, and take a nap when I'm feeling drowsy. Sometimes, I show up for work in my underwear. My dogs sleep next to my desk. There's a fridge full of great food for when I get hungry and my boss often suggests that I sleep late in the morning. My daughter hangs out with me at the office when she gets out of school.
I'm self-employed as a photographer.
So, I also work whenever the boss tells me to. Some weeks I don't get paid. I pay a higher tax rate than employees do. I answer my work phone whenever it rings (weekends, late at night, on my birthday, on vacation). I don't get vacation pay. Or sick time. Or paid holidays. I currently answer to over a dozen "bosses" on a regular basis (all of whom are treated like they are my only client). I clean my own office. Hell, I had to buy my own office.
I hope that I never have to go back to being an employee again.

Sounds like some good perks there Wood. Just have to finish my three years of supervision, and I can start my private practice. I think then the boss will approve of my smoking at work.

I work from home, so technically I could probably smoke at work. Unfortunately my wife doesn't like the idea of me smoking up our house so I only smoke in the garage. I'm thinking of maybe investing in an air purifier, closing my office door and opening the windows. But for now, I only smoke when I'm on my lunch break in the garage or outside.

I work for a furniture retailer in the office. It would be a great shock if I were to light up in the office. Also, of course, it's not allowed. I only started smoking pipes about 8 months ago, and only do it on my days off right now. So, I have no felt need to do it more often, at this time. However, it would be great to be able to do it while I work, but then they would have to allow that for cigarette smokers as well, and I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke. So, I can live with it.

I'm just a cubicle jockey. Sit behind a computer all day, doing work (aka look up pipes and pipe tobacco for about 75% of the day). I do get to smoke at work, well, outside at the designated smoking areas, but I prefer smoking at the State Capitol across the street or down by the river.

I hear you on the cubicle work aquilas. I just started work in a rural county in Florida, and my current office consists of a kiddie chair and a folding table inside what I am guessing is a former storage closet.

My boss is a rabid anti-smoker. Its such a pain in the ass. He confronted me about my smoking on lunch breaks and I replied "My smoking is the only thing keeping me from coming to work dress as a postal worker with a gun." He's never mentioned it again. lol

I wonder if he is a former smoker. They tend to be the worst to deal with in my experience. My grandfather is one of them. He was never a pipe smoker, just cigarettes, but he is militant.

You know psych pipes once you have done your three years you can then set up on your own and then do the Freud move with a pipe as opposed to cigars! I am lucky as my office is also my home so I smoke around the place all the time and my wife really never complains that much so I guess I am lucky in that regard!

You got that right condor! My wife doesn't discourage my pipe smoking. Now If I could convince her to be happy with me growing out my facial hair I could be a REAL psychologist.

I work for a state agency, so no smoking indoors - but there are several nice benches outside with those "smoker's post" things placed strategically nearby, so once the weather improves, I may have to see if I can avail myself of the option...
Of course, I'll need to stash my usual post-smoke cleaning supplies in my desk - toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, and something to wash out the mustache and beard with. :D

What happened to the good old days when Elliot Ness smoked cigarettes and the guy from the Treasury Department smoked a pipe!

Smoke at work? Absolutely not. I am a corrections officer. I can not bring in my cell phone, magazines, newspapers, soda cans. Hell I can not even bring in a lunch bag unless it is clear. If I accidentally left my tobacco pouch in my pocket I would be sitting in front of my supervisor with a tape recorder recording the conversation (No joke.) and no matter what I would be getting discipline (pay without leave) when it was over.

That's interesting eastern. My father is a corrections officer, and he is allowed to smoke his pipe in the yard. He can't bring in his cellphone and the like though. Different wardens or perhaps different state regs.

easterntraveler, I don't have it quite as bad as you, but working in a hospital, the mere mention of tobacco is met with scorn and condescending looks. It's like having a social disease. That's why I'm very much looking forward to retirement in the summer of '15.

Sadly, I can't smoke where I work, It's a smoke free facility. I can leave on my lunch break and smoke, but I usually don't have time.

Back when I was a millwright I could smoke at work all day long, but back then I mainly smoked cigars and cigarettes.
By the way, I'm a maintenance mechanic/machinist/welder for a company that makes SCR catalysts for coal, gas and wood fired power plants.

Pipe smoking is rather encouraged, if not borderline required, at work. I'm even attempting to make disciples out of cigarette smokers. But then, I work for SPC ..... such a blessing !
