Neither fish nor fowl, this one.

Posted mainly as idea food for hobby restorers and repairers who've felt the urge to make a whole pipe, but concluded after thinking it through they don't have the space, money for a lathe, etc.

The idea? Get yourself a decent oversize stummel, and use it as a jumping off point.

Shaping is less work than even a pre-drilled block and consists almost entirely of the "fun stuff".

This pipe started out as one of those jumbo Charatan Specials that were so popular in the 70's and 80's.

It was excruciatingly ugly proportion-wise, with a big Castello 55-ish "chin", and the usual pinched-looking, too-short, low effort stem Charatan is famous for putting on their oversized pipes.

So, I just fitted a length of rod stock to the stummel, and didn't stop removing material until I was happy with the way everything looked.

It ended up 90 grams, with a 2" deep bowl, and is just over 7 inches long. (Still a biggie)

Smokes great. 👍

Comfy, too, since you can cut the stem to the width, thickness, button height, and so forth to whatever feels best.
