Greetings gents,

Lately I am thinning my collection to bare minimum, especially since I figured out what pipes I enjoy to smoke. And especially on those departing days where you think if it is even possible to smoke one pipe a couple of times a day, for several weeks. I remember seeing chasing chambers doing it with his pipes...but I noticed smoking the same pipe 3 or more times a day soured it and made it smoke wet even when I clean it thoroughly. But, I also have been veiwing "Morta" pipes and from the many reviews saying it doesn't impart any flavors of its own similar to meerschaum while being more rugged.

My favorite shape is a bing, and seeing the opportunity to make one in morta with a stainless steel insert to make it both durable, resistant, and able to smoke different tobaccos in one pipe several times without imparting flavors is a dream. Maybe a fairytale.

What do you think? Should I commission one? I mean if I am getting a bing it would be from scottie piersel. That would cost 500-600+ dollars. Better make it the "perfect" pipe for all occasions.

Before investing all that money on your idea, try out a Job Bud of Steel pipe. They are a newer pipe from Italy and only around $75. They make all Stainless models. The idea is there is no ghost and you can clean it with soap and water. There are some videos on youtube about it as well.

I have seen the muttonchop piper video and have seen the pipe. I love the stainless steel idea but everything about that pipe is a turn off unfortunately. Small bowl, short (As I said, I like Bing pipes) acrylic stem, and it doesn’t look too good to me. The only thing closer to what I would want is a falcon with a meerschaum lined bowl. But even then falcon pipes usually have smaller bowls especially ones that are meerschaum lined.

You can get a quite large all Meerschaum bowl for a Falcon on ebay from Meerschaum Depot. I’m sure they’d take a commission as well for any shape/size you’d want. But if your set on a Bing, I think your method is the only way to go. I was just thinking of a simpler option before going all in.

I have several Bings by Bruno Nuttens and they are fantastic.
They are nice, but holding on for a merchant service Specials. Big bowl bings is what I am after. I like to take my pipes everywhere, and durability is important, especially on pencil shanked pipes. Is it possible for an independent pipe maker to insert a metal tube inside the merchant service pipe and modify the stem to accept it? That would be nice, maybe perfect...

I would think it possible to have a tube inserted into a pipe but it could reduce the diameter and flow.

Personally I'm good all the way down to 4mm but 6 is much more preferable.

Considering that the outside diameter of the shank is probably the determining factor.

Hm. I’ll check that but seeing scottie piersel doing shanks so small yet fitted with a metal tubes raises my hopes up.

Forgot to ask, do you have any idea on pipe makers who do “metal tube” inserts so I can contact them other than scottie? I would like to have a couple in case she declines.

this is just me but why not go down to three or four pipes? Meer lined might also fit your bill. Durable and ghosts like a meer not a briar and can be smoked once dry unquestionably and without debate. Sure someone could make that for you even with a tube.
That all said I have a confession I hate the Scottie pencil stems, it kind of hits me the same way a fireproof baby in an inferno would hit me. I know it's fine but it doesn't feel fine.

The idea of a steel lined chamber doesn't appeal to me, but apparently some people love 'em? I wouldn't tamp with my finger on those. I'll stick with traditional materials, thanks; maybe it's force of habit.

I don't think they mean a steel-lined chamber, but a metal tube in the shank, which would naturally make the pipe more durable.

I get you lol. That is my problem with Merchant service pipes. Pencil shanks with no metal tubes? If they where babies, they wouldn’t be fireproof and that is just not good at all.

Not to forget but I am keeping a handful of pipes, but only the ones I deem worthy to me which is a very small list since I am picky now and my standards have changed in enjoying pipes.

I think the job pipe up there is not only steel lined in the chamber but the whole bowl is steel. Which I can't help but imagine would taste strange.
I don’t disregard job pipes, but they are opposite of what I want in a pipe in every way, except the neutrality in flavor due to it being metal.

Just my 1 cent experience ... all of the pipes I bought that were the "one" ended up not being my favorites. My favorites ended up being less expensive pipes I liked but smoke perfectly every time. Therefore, I have two groups of pipes ... my favorites for home and then similar for travel and knock-around but not they are not as good smokers as my favorites. In fact, some of my travel pipes are far more expensive but not as valuable to me. I would suggest you find out which of your pipes you most enjoy then search and buy two or three of those instead. It saves a lot of time, money and aggravation. Unless of course you just want to say you commissioned a pipe etc which is a different purpose.

That is my story too. I had a dunhill, 2 ashtons, and a couple of punto oro’s and high end Petersons and they are, in my eyes, inferior to a Cheap Bing “maro special” pipe I bought off eBay. Not because they are actually inferior, but to me that bing now is what I enjoy in a pipe. Far away from my nose not to irritate it, pencil shank helps in reducing the weight but the bowl shape is a classic beautiful and elegant billiard while having a considerable bowl size and a vulcanite tapered stem for ease when clenching. End of story. A perfect pipe.
