I received my 309 yesterday. The drilling and the workmanship, from the stem to the bowl is spot on. No complaints. So far, the pipe is breaking in as expected. What I do wish was different is the size of the stem. It is actually well crafted with strong masculine lines - in almost a Mussolini artistic way …. Interesting to say the least. However, the length of the stem should have been increased by at least an inch and a half to create a better balanced and historically more accurate look for the 309. IMG_9549.jpeg
I will have an alternate stem made for the pipe so that it has the following look….IMG_9546.jpegThe current configuration comes in at just over 5 inches. What are your thoughts?

It’s hard to see from the photos but the sides of the stem are indeed very angular as compared to previous stems. It’s an interesting look, but I prefer the more rounded look. In person it clearly looks more boxy so to speak. As opposed to the longer stem I showed in the post with the ruler.

I think these new acrylic stems are all the same size and interchangeable in the system standard line. I prefer them over the older, longer ones for the purpose of my clenching experience as I get greater stability from them. They don't look the same (shorter as you noted) but I prefer them functionally.
What I'm beginning to like even more, are the new ebonite (?) stems on the system spigot series, so I ordered my 309 in that model. They feel perfect and perform quite nicely.
So this is on the way...

I've also got a 309 Peterson Pipe Notes POTY with the condenser but I haven't enjoyed that one yet...

I don’t dislike the stem, but my goal has been to own a more traditional looking 309. The new stem is quite interesting and yes, it has a good clench feel. Thanks for sharing.

The easiest solution is just to choose the three stem option at the time of purchase. Short, medium, and long.

Having the selection is a great way to accommodate the situation (driving vs reading in a recliner, for example), as well as your own mood on a particular day (sporty vs working class-y vs landed gentry-y).

Here you go. The 4s arrived today. My gut instinct was correct in buying it. Now that I have a comparison the size difference of the stems is glaring. Dangling the 4s clears my chin nicely whereas the 309 turns back sharply and can touch my chin at the ferrel.
The grain orientation is the same on both with the 4s having tighter and more plentiful Birds Eye’s. It’s marginally nicer than the 309 but not by much. In fact I think I prefer the color of standard over the deluxe. The draw of the two couldn’t be more different. Where the 309 has a more open draw with a slight whistle the 4s is far smoother with a bit more resistance and quiet. It’ll be interesting to see how they differ in use. I’m going to keep them both. All of my systems are deluxe models so I’m actually happy to finally have a standard. I can definitely see where the extra cost goes to, not just a nicer box and sock but in overall quality.
I’ll post better pics in the show your Pete’s and what are you smoking threads.

The end of the stem in the top picture looks odd. This part.

I have two vintage 309s and just got my new one this week, and so far I'm loving the shorter acrylic stem. Great for clenching, in my opinion. It would be nice to have the option of a longer one for those who prefer it, but since the new models are different from the old in having acrylic stems anyway, I like that they are visually distinct also. I don't find either look superior to the other.

Those two stummels seem pretty different to me.

Here are three rare beauties from someone who has decided to sell some hard to find Pete’s. The last one is a 309 Spigot with a condenser. All have a chimney condenser as they are Deluxe’s. I own each and they are among my favorite smokes. The top one is same size as a Pub Pipe. The Middle is an 05 calabash with old style b curves stem and bottom pipe as mentioned is the first SPIGOT EVER used in a spigot.
His decision to not be a Peterson Fan might be an interest which I thought some of you 309 fans might wanna know. Peterson Pipe Notes .org has had an annual POY the last three years.

These prices are great. 👍🏼 Especially for the Pub Pipe Sandblasted in that color shade.

be well…
