I've been smoking pretty much nothing but Dominican Carter Hall for the last few weeks. The American Carter Hall I smoked before came in pouches, not the tub. But I think the new stuff is pretty darn close to the old. Is it exactly the same? Someone that has smoked tubs of the old will have to comment on that. But it's more enjoyable to me than Carter Hall Match. And the new Prince Albert is pretty good too.

I've been smoking the new Carter Hall for awhile also and it's damn good in my opinion and about the same as the old, maybe a little better. I never tried the CH match blends and haven't tried the new Prince Albert yet but will sometime in the future. I like the new Carter Hall and stocked up when it came in.

I've only recently been smoking PA (from I tub I ordered a few weeks back) and have been enjoying it very much. In the past, I'd only occasionally had a pouch of it. Seeing this thread, I checked my tub. It is indeed from Dominican Republic. I don't have enough experience with PA in the past so I can't say if there's a change for the better or worse. What I _can_ say is this PA is quite good, at least to me. I've been smoking it straight or blended with C&D Kelly's Coin.

The only Pipe tobacco plant I know of in the DR is the STG/Lane facility. Well over a year ago, Lane announced they were moving production from the Tucker Georgia plant to the DR. From the label shown earlier in the thread, the key language seems to be “Manufactured for John Middleton” From this, I surmise that STG is making it, and Middleton, a sub of Altria, distributes it. Typical big conglomerate back and forth dealings with one another.

I’ve smoked both Sutliff Carter Hall and PA Match blends and while they are close they are not dead ringers. The difference seems to be the toppings in both. I believe toppings are a closely guarded secret but the tobacco blends can be figured out. Both matches are close enough to scratch the itch though. I’m most curious about any difference between the DR PA and the American PA. I’m not happy with the off shoring but when my current tub of PA is finished, I’m going to want another. Nearly everything I wear comes from Asia so I guess I’ll have to live with it.

And that's where I am. My codger blends are running out. So I'll be taking a chance on Carter Hall because I liked that better than the American SWR.

Will lower labor costs decrease the cost of the blends? Or is someone else grabbing all that? I'm glad they're back in business in any case, though I don't smoke PA and I like Chatham Manor better than Carter Hall.
I always respected your takes on tobaccos. You are actually the reason I tied and currently have three tubs of Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic in my cellar. But I just can't stomach Chatham Manor. Russ is a tobacco wizard but this stuff I can't smoke. It literally fries my tongue and roof of my mouth.

Interesting. I wondered what was up with the plastic wrap on my newer tubs. I'll have to bust some Dom. Rep Carter Hall out and see how it tastes.

Oh boy I'm scared.

Left, Dominican republic. Right America. 4 of my tubs are from Dom Rep. And they all look like this.

Curious to hear your thoughts on the new stuff, since I personally recognize you as this subs Carter Hall guy. For me It's different but not different enough to stop me from smoking it. The differences I've noticed is the burley is more mellow and not as flavorful as it used to be. This observation carries over into my thoughts on the new PA as well. Anyhow, It gets better with time and still taste great when smoked bone dry. Cheers!

I've had the Chatham Manor which was advertised as a Carter Hall match and I can say it is nothing like Carter Hall. When I opened the tub the tobacco was drenched in casing and when I tried to smoke it , it fried my whole mouth. I tried drying it out , packing it lighter and used filtered and unfiltered pipes with the same results. There is absolutely no similarities between Carter Hall and Chatham Manor. Taste, tin note, room note, and cut are nothing alike. Carter Hall and Prince Albert are their own animals. In my experience there is no replicating them.
I had a similar experience with Prince Andrew. The Milan tobacco match is really good, though.

I miss the “luxury” pouches of PA so goddamn much, the tubs these days seem rather flavorless by comparison. As soon as I heard PA was back in production, I anxiously scooped up a tub, as I had been nursing a two ounce luxury pouch for an eternity.
I thought, finally, I won’t ever have to worry about not having my favorite smoke again. I eagerly cracked it open, smoked a few bowls, and that was it. It’s just been sitting there in my cellar ever since. A tub of crushed hopes and pipe dreams. I would trade my Esoterica stock for those damn little pouches of pipe-smoking gold.

I miss the pouches too. But prefer the taste in the tubs. Pouches were easier to grab and go instead of refilling my pouch all the time.
