Marshmallows and molasses always worked for me. Definitely need to stake down traps 100% of the time. Stake down the bait too. Coons are smart and as much as I like them you need to get them out of your house by any means possible.

Last night I set the trap with a piece of carboard placed to act like a ramp going up to the pressure plate. The plan was he would step on the ramp and snap the trap. For bate I used cajeta on a cookie. I spread some on the bottom of the cookie so it would stick to the ramp and put some on top of the cookie for plenty of odor. This morning the trap was sprung but empty. He had managed to reach in the bars and pull the ramp over enough to get to the cookie. I'm thinking about what to try next. puffy

This morning the trap was sprung. I took a look and jumped back as quick as I could. Caught another skunk... or maybe the same one. Hope he learns and will leave my trap alone.... puffy

Free food, a nice safe place to sleep, and freedom in the morning...sounds like paradise for a skunk. Or for me, really.

They are trash pandas for a reason. Bring big city trash bin that they collect weekly and leave some leftover from the dinner in it. Leave the lid open. Check it next morning.

It won't kill them, but you're not going to like getting them out either. The Duke Dog Proof coon traps are hard to beat. Just make sure to anchor them as they will 100% walk off with the raccoon.

Living one block from the PD, I do not agree that these are as quiet as a BB gun, ha ha. Or a pellet gun. Just chambering a round will have the blue and reds in front of my house in seconds, ha ha.
My high powered pellet gun, merely sounds like I opened a carbonated beverage.
For suburbia... this may be a better option. I've dropped ground hogs from more than 200 feet. But sure, further out into the country, I'd opt for a real rifle.

Have you considered a suppressor?

I was rather busy this morning and forgot to add this pic I took of the skunk. He's curled up asleep. He spent the day in there with the trap open and finally left when it got dark. If this keeps up I'm going to start charging him for room and board. The bricks and pots of rocks are to keep the coon from moving the trap. At least that part of the plan is working. puffy

This morning it was deja vu all over again! A skunk in the trap. I'm not sure it's the same one as before, he seems to look bigger. I opened the trap carefully and he didn't spray. Now he's gone. It's looking like I going to have to relocate the trap to somewhere the coons go, but the skunks don't. Think I'll reconsider the patio roof. puffy

"Not feelin so damn smart now, are ya?"

Last evening around sundown I placed the trap in our attic, set it and waited. It only took a couple of hours and "SMAP!". I knew what that sound was as soon as I heard it. Got cha! It was a struggle getting him down the pull-down stair from the attic. He must have weighted about 20 lbs and kept going back and forth in the trap which constantly changed the ballance as I tried to negotiate the stairs. Finally I put him in the back of my truck and the wife and I gave him a ride to a large wooded park about 5 miles away. The park has everything a coon needs. That's one down and one to go. Stay tuned for the next exciting chapter. puffy

Here’s to hoping it doesn’t find its way back. 5 miles is the usually recommended minimum so that they don’t find their way back. Lots of factors play into how far is far enough.

5 miles wasn’t enough when my neighbor was trapping and releasing raccoons a few years back. Bastards would find their way back in less than a week and be that much smarter about traps.

That's a depressing thought..... puffy
