Oh, I thought I brought it up in this thread. There's a sterling silver washer atop a mound of tobacco in the base of the chamber that I'm keeping in for several smokes to condense and retain moisture and tar for the meerschaum to absorb.

Does the plug of tobacco do anything to the taste at all? Do you change it periodically?
Not at all.

I'm also allowing cake to build. The idea is that those heavily colored antique meerschaums having heavy cake didn't affect their ability to color and may have actually contributed to it.
Thanks to this thread, I purchased this one from Altinok. I've been considering a basket weave Meer for some time. This isn't my perfect carve for a weave but the size is.

All this talk of meers has me considering periodically adding one to my rotation, If I may ask the experts here ... I have a Pioneer block meerschaum bent egg or full bent billiard style I bought years ago but never smoked much ... are they any good ? I realize perhaps not as good as commissions from Turkey ... but I mean generally ??? Thanks.
That's all you need to know. No less than anything we're smoking and my favorites are my no names.
Smoke them more and find out. There's varying degrees of quality just like with briar pipes but I suspect they're at least okay, especially if they're solid block Meerchaum.

Mine is (I think) a Pioneer African Tawny bent billiard. I don't have a picture but it looks like this one from Pipedia except full bent like a Savinelli 614 :

Just so we don't get into some smart arse suggesting this pipe had been pre-colored in the 19th century with Oxblood here is the original pipe circa 2013 shown in a group shot at the top of the picture in the 12 o'clock position.

That's pretty neat. However, you now need to get a cutty brand new unsmoked, and then turn it shit brown!
