As a boy, I watched a fair amount of football with one of my brothers. I really liked Johnny Unitas and Roman Gabriel. I wanted to play football (never pursued it in any way); I had a paper route delivering the New York Daily News in ’77 and followed the Yankees that year—somewhere, I still have my huge ceramic stein with the newspaper cover that says, “Reggie . .. Reggie ... Reggie ...” on it. I used to watch a fair amount of boxing when it aired on the Wide World of Sports. Alexis Argüello and Roberto Duran were huge then. I lost interest in boxing when more and more divisions and belts became prevalent; boxing really got boring for me when Floyd Mayweather emerged with his jab, jab, run away approach to boxing. Yawn. I followed Tiger Woods in golf when he was an amateur and watched his pro career with excitement for several years. I irregularly tune into baseball, basketball, and football championships. I try to catch tennis majors when possible.

I’ve played table tennis almost weekly since 1984, with a one year gap due to a torn calf muscle I sustained while going for a wide crosscourt return in a doubles game, and a couple years off due to the pandemic. I watched a lot of table tennis years ago and collected VHS tapes and DVDs for a good stretch. Because I played competitive darts, I still watch darts. I wish I had stuck with it and developed a consistently excellent game (love killed all that years ago).

I’ve watched mixed martial arts avidly for the last ten or twelve years. It’s so much more dynamic and unpredictable than boxing. I love it. It’s almost guaranteed that if a UFC event is happening on a Saturday, I’m watching it for six hours. It used to be mostly only PPVs with a regular group while eating, drinking craft beer, and sipping fine whiskies; these days, it’s usually Susan and me, maybe our friend John, or our neighbour, Terry. I load my bigger pipes that last three to four hours per chamber and I’m good to go.

Now for the rest of the story: Played many sports in my youth, now relegated to only golf and lawn bowls. Yes, I even played cricket, rugby, fives and court "real" tennis when I was in England, but couldn't play them now even if available near where I live.

Now, I won't watch basketball (until the semi's of March Madness) since the Warriors became ordinary, and the Sharks (hockey) are pathetic. I played in HS, and could shoot well and skate, just not at the same time! It's a great game to watch if your team is doing ok. Yeah, I am a fair weather fan of some sports....

Love the 49ers, esp this year. SF Giants —will watch until they're out of contention, so at least 90+ games a year.

My real love now is the Premier League football. Tottenham Hotspur is my favorite team, even in their current swoon. Champions League, World Cup, EUFA matches, some top games in other leagues, even a bit of US footie. Going to London soon to watch the Spurs in their newish stadium. Also rooting for Everton, as they got screwed with a huge points deduction.

Tennis - Wimbledon, US Open and French open, plus when there are big matches- Djokovic, Sinner, etc. on satellite fixtures.
Golf- Both US and Brit Opens, Augusta, and our local Pebble Beach Pro-Am, (where I volunteer.)
Lacrosse- College lacrosse when my college team is televised, plus NCAA championship regardless of who's playing.
Swimming, diving- Olympics only.
Curling- Love it but mostly only Int'l competitions; never played.
Ice skating- pairs freestyle in the Olympics.
Skiing- and Winter mountain sports- now only Olympics.
Snooker, pool, billiards- When I run across them, or watch Ronnie on videos.
Squash- Haven't watched it for an age, but played every day in college. DirecTV used to air some great matches. Now stuck with Comcrap.
Pro wrestling, WWE, and the like- never, though I wrestled in high school.
Boxing- Friday night fights every week for a few years. Now no interest unless a match is hyped enough to interest me.
Horse racing- might watch Kentucky Derby, but little else. Loved going to Saratoga (NY) to watch live and take in the atmosphere.
Softball, women's basketball, soccer- no interest.
Bowling- Loved it as a teenager, and will watch a frame or two if I happen on it.
Pro Shuffle Board- just kidding! I played it as a youth, liked it then.
Poker- Not a sport. Like playing but won't watch on TV.
Motor Sports- Became enamored of F-1 4-5 years ago, but am rapidly losing interest. Loved Hamilton at his peak, but Verstappen leaves me cold. Go George Russell!

There must be more, so I'll stop before someone labels me as a sports junkie......

Interesting topic. I was watching the Michigan/Ohio St pre-game and all the hoopla and it just kind of soured me for some reason. Then when the crowds rushed the field after the win, I was like, did they just cure cancer or something? I don't know, maybe it's the old fart in me, but the over the top promos, etc; just doesn't strike a chord anymore. I guess as I get older, the promos and the created melodramas have kinda run their course with me. I'll watch the occasional football game, but I usually don't care who wins.

I love baseball and watch a ton of it but honestly it’s not the same anymore to me. I think what’s killing my enjoyment are the fans that take their teams so seriously. It’s just ridiculous the amount of fistfights in the stands and ugliness online over laundry. Too many people out there looking for an identity.

Are you an Ohio State fan? I jest, and agree about the over the top crap that comes with a big game. Thank heavens for digital recorders. I FF to just past the opening kickoff, through most ads, and most half time blather.

I generally find a reason to like a team or dislike their opponents when it's not a team I like to begin with.

And that's one reason I prefer to watch on TV.

Or not 😀

I don’t mind watching occasionally the sports that I understand or have played in youth(Cricket, Soccer, Tennis, Badminton, Ping Pong, etc…)

However, if I get an opportunity I would still play but don’t understand how adults are so passionate about the games, keeping scores, discussing and debating endlessly about them in gatherings, which tends to get boring 😑

And they are not even playing it.

If I had a loud alter ego, I would take him to these gatherings and debate endlessly about the differences of St James Perique and Acadian Perique till others get as bored as me 😀

Naw, I went to Virginia Tech. They use to be competitive back in the day when Vick was the QB, but even now, I really don't care how they do. I agree, I usually won't start watching a game until I know the 1qtr has started.

I watch College basketball and College football religiously. Also, some NBA. I absolutely hate summer because they arent on tv. I watch 2 tvs my phone and a tablet during March Madness and some times dual screen in the regular seasons. I'm lucky my wife loves to read and doesn't have anything she wants to watch. She hates sports though but our kids love it.

Watching Hawkeye fans carrying parts of the goalposts towards exists at the old Metrodome was hilarious.

Pre-COVID I was doing a lot of PPV pool (SVB) and really got into Snooker and still will watch O’Sullivan if he’s to be found online.

I used to watch athletics when I was a kid. I was never into watching team sports, or playing them. At school I'd rather have been fishing or riding my bike than running round a field chasing a ball. But I enjoyed the tension, the will-they-won't-they of track sports, and probably the stadium atmosphere as well. But as an adult all sports leaves me cold. I don't know why. I'm a keen biker and I like fast riding but I never watch bike racing and can't think of anything worse than joining the throng on the Isle of Mann for the TT.

Can't stand TV's showing sports (or anything else) in pubs either. If I approach a bar and see a massive TV screen on the wall showing a football match I move on. Fortunately I rarely frequent pubs anymore as I no longer enjoy drinking, but when I did I would dread a world cup year. Wall to wall football everywhere and no conversation.

I'm not anti-sport though. It's healthy, physically and psychologically and kids particularly should be encouraged to play something if they enjoy it.
