The list is just a good starting point to try and learn more about pipe and tobacco in London during the boom .It is a lot of fun to try and track down the history of some of these old and often forgotten companies .We probably never learn the history of some .

Pipe finishers and mounters - not makers, which was pretty true for a number of purveyors at that time, including Barling who didn't take over manufacturing all of their bowls until 1906. The practice of importing turned bowls,fitting them with stems, and polishing them in house remained a large part of the business for decades. Charatan, Comoy, Loewe, Sasieni, Barling, BBB, Orlik, Weingott and a few others, pretty much made their own product. The rest imported from St. Claude, or other parts, or bought pipes made by the makers noted above, and had their own names stamped on them.

Talk about obscure, but apparently the brand was pretty longlasting.

Henry Perkins starts by making mounts for pipes from c.1880 and takes his sons as partners, the style of the firm changing to Henry Perkins & Sons from c.1900.

In 1923 they took TWO stands at the BRITISH INDUSTRIES FAIR in which to show their skills and produce.

One stand was to show the pipes which they were alraedy well known for.

The other stand was to show their range of SILVER MOUNTED GLASS - including bottles, vases, jars, scent sprays etc.

An interesting tidbit circa 1922:

Every pipe smoker knows the annoyance of having the bore of his pet briar get choked with a tiny grain of tobacco Let him pull and puff as he might no smoke came through the stem The new patent pipe just brought out by H Perkins & Sons Ltd of London is designed with a self cleaning mouthpiece The small orifice in the base of the bowl cannot choke as one turn of the mouthpiece cleans the pipe This new model is meeting with deserved success in England and should become popular in this country once its meritorious features become known In addition to this new pipe H Perkins & Sons manufacture dozens of up to date articles for the smoker Besides pipes of all sorts they produce cigar and cigarette holders tobacco pouches cigar cases pipe cleaners and scrapers and numerous other articles The company of which Henry C Perkins and James Adler are directors has been manufacturing pipes and smokers sundries for the last 50 years and now employs more than 200 people An American connection is sought by this progressive house.
