… that make you happy. Saw the first red tomatoes of the season yesterday 🍅. BLTs are in my future. How many have gardens, and what do you usual plant? I always have tomatoes… Beefsteak, Better Boy, Early Girly… and San Marzano for sauce. I also grow beans, banana peppers (sweet & hot), bell peppers (red & green), onions, zucchini, eggplant, sweet basil… and Jack-O’-Lantern pumpkins 🎃 for the first time, which are taking over the yard. I have to have it fenced in because of the deer 🙄

Enough deers and rabbits to eat our trees and flowers. Don't need a proper garden. Tho fig trees are doing ok. Probably move them to open area in the fall. Deers and rabbits leave figs alone. It's the damned birds that poke at the figs and any and all flying bugs finish 'em off. Gotta time right to beat them to the figs.

Ah, tomatoes. One of my favorite foods. The best is straight off the vine and into my mouth.

(Incidentally, I find it humorous that people are posting their dogs in a food post. I've been in places that have dog on the menu but I've never tried it.)

I assume they are talking about the little things that make them happy, but I see what you mean.

We never had much of a garden, but the neighbor has been kind enough to "gift" us a number of tomatoes over the years. Fresh grown tomatoes are God's gift to us for putting up with this foolishness.

20+ years in Texas broke my gardening spirit, fighting the eternal drought and the toil under the sun, though @wilblee I DO miss the Hill Country wildflower displays.

I had encouraged the spiderwort in my yard until the entire back yard was covered in it every spring. It's an interesting plant. The color varies from bright pink to a darker purple or blue, depending on pollution levels. One of the local names for it is "cow slobber", due to the pile of goo it turns into when dying out.

Since settling in Knoxville, I am slowly re-engaging with outdoor summer activity and may plant a few things in the future. For now, it's trees and perennials We put in a persimmon tree to fill in for a dying redbud and some blueberry bushes along the property line.

The next county east of us (Grainger) is renowned for tomatoes and peaches, so it's too easy to pick some up whenever we want. The Carolina peaches are in right now and I'm on the verge of ODing on them...

BLTs have a very short life expectancy around here!
