I was able to talk with a very busy Phil this morning, and have more information for those of us who enjoy our cobs. Phil said this year’s crop looks promising, and the early ears he has seen are larger than average. Harvesting could begin as early as mid-September, and continue through the end of October. It looks as if their expanded crop will give them enough material for two years worth of pipes.
While much of the harvest will be dried for two years, some of it will go through a special drying process, which will make the cobs ready to be made into pipes in just 4-6 weeks. Normally, all of the corn is harvested before the kernels are removed. But this year they will remove the kernels as the corn is harvested, which should speed up the process.
As for the stems on the new-style Freehands, which now have ferules on the shank to reduce splitting, they’re still made of vulcanite, although Phil is looking at switching to one made of Lucite from the same supplier. If the harvest is as successful as it looks like it might, maybe we’ll see a few new or retro models before too long. And hopefully more natural cobs will be able to be made.

I do know that Phil has mentioned wanting to bring out a mini-churchwarden based either on the Pony or a similar small, existing model. And of course maybe the old bulldog will finally return. I have to send him a small package, and I'll ask him about probable new offering in my note. He's so busy, it's hard to cover all the things we want to know about in a short phone call. I'll be sure to ask about reed stems being used again.

MM is center stage when it comes to cobs for sure. I was in a smoke shop here in mid coast Maine today and saw a card with about 20 cobs from CHINA. what crap. Is there anything that we don't import from there? Hopefully the Brothers won't stoop low enough to buy that stuff.

Great to hear that this years USA crop is a good one.

Thanks for following up on this John. I wonder if the corn is actually used for feed or anything?

Maybe seed for the next year?

Here's an old picture of a straight bulldog. I prefer bent pipes, but don't have a shot of one of those.

Some of you may be interested in a prototype they've made called the Morgan. I called looking for a nose warmer and this was what they suggested. I love it and have purchased two more. They are not available on the website but I know they still have some.
