A pipe that will sit in a stable way with the chamber up has a fine attribute. Straight pipes that will do this are a real convenience, but for the full benefit, bent pipes are good because their footprint can be so small. I have several sitters in my collection, among them two Peterson B11 bent brandy's, sometimes also sold as volcanos, that sit on about one square and a half inch. It's really nice at desk, or roaming around the house, to be able to park a lit pipe with assurance. My first pipe, bought in the seventies, is a bent pot sitter, probably a Chacom, a Tinder Box St. Ives. If you find a sitter you like, it will like you back.

I also love sitters, and most of my collection will sit in some way or another, some a little more cock-eyed than others, but good enough to not spill the tobacco all over the table. My favorites are bent sitters, for the exact reason that you describe, @mso489. I also appreciate the older straight pipes, especially the billiards, that have that flat spot on the bottom. One reason I like old British billiards. I don't own a single pipe stand yet, so if I'm not smoking a sitter, the pipe is in my hands the entire smoke. During our Tucson summers this can be problematic as I don't need anything to contribute any warmth to the briar, such as my grubby hands. To be honest, I also kind of like the aesthetics of a good bent sitter as well.

I have various roosts around the house where I can park a pipe where it won't spill, and it is not near anything flammable, and the cats can't get it. But a sitter pipes makes this almost effortless, any flat surface that is high up.

Sitters just feel like they are cooperating and contribute to the serenity that pipe smoking is supposed to impart. I think many tend to shrug off this particular feature in a pipe, but I suggest it is a definite luxury, usually at no extra cost.

Since my first pipe, mentioned above, was a sitter, I think it has always been a feature that attracted me. I don't want extra weight or bulk to attain the sitter feature, but otherwise it is a definite plus. If it is designed right, it gives a kind of underlined streamlined look to a pipe, more dynamic than sedentary if it is carried off well.

I have a couple of pipes that I cant help noticing how easy it would have been to make them stand up straight. Hell, Ive though about doing it myself.. just a little flat spot on the bottom, and boom, a sitter.

I love all the sitters in my collection. Especially this "drunken sitter" by American carver, Randy Wiley. Seen many of these over the years, but took me awhile to find one.IMG_3612.jpgIMG_3608.jpg
