This guy was on eBay, and nobody was going for it. I figured sure why not take a chance. I’ll only be out 7 bucks. Now my only complaint is that the shipping took forever.

I cleaned it up and stained it. The the whole under button was gone. So I shaped a new one. I’ll have to see how well that patch will hold up with use. Overall well worth the 7 bucks.

Any secrets on cleaning the vulcanite stem?

Oxiclean helps with the oxidation along with a mr clean magic eraser. Then sanding depending how rough the stem is, start around 600-800 grit then work all the way to 12000. Make sure to tape over any brand markings and do wet sanding until 3600 then remove the tape and dry sand making sure to wipe it down between grits. Buff with white diamond fallowed by carnauba wax.

Be careful when sanding by the edge where the stem and shank meet, you don’t want to round off the sharp edge.

Nice pipe and great job reworking the pipe. Very inspiring. I used to see old pipes in antique shops and wondered why anyone would want to buy them (didn’t smoke a pipe back then) but I can see why now. Has me interested in giving it a try!

Thanks, yeah I was the same way. Looking through the pipes trying to see if there's any that are usable. Now the beat up ones are the ones I look for. Sadly shop owners are trying to price everything as if it was in perfect condition, or drug store brands as if they were highly sought after (at least all the shops I've visited since I started restoring). I think you'll enjoy trying it out, Bare Pipe on YouTube is a good resource to start off with. Fixing up pipes can be addictive.

Thanks, This particular stem is vulcanite, but I use activated charcoal and black ca glue mixed into a thin paste. With something put behind the void to hold the paste in place until it drys, and then shape it.

So this doesn’t require any powder to mix with? That’s awesome I’ll have to try it. With the type of repair we use it for it looks like the supply would last quite a while. Any problem with it having air bubbles? Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

You are welcome, only friends here
No, no powder, it is a two part epoxy. No bubbles given you stirr it really well. Meaning till your fingers hurt.
It has a high viscosity, so this stuff is really fat. Long setting time !
