Working my way through my personal Holy Trinity of DFK blends.

Old Dark Fired
JackKnife Plug
Irish Flake

I see all three of these as kindred spirits but never really thought to do a thoughtful comparison of the three and thought it would be an interesting thing to do. Since each blend really highlights the DFK I think that comparing the three might help me pick up on nuances that I hadn’t noticed in each, and comparing similar blends across brands is always fun.

I’m thinking about picking one and smoking it for a day or so, then moving on to the next blend. Any thoughts?

Jackknife plug is fucking disgusting and smells like rotting death (at least the tin I got). ODF is good--not really my thing but high quality to be sure. Irish Flake I've been meaning to try but haven't yet got around to it.

suprisingly, I just smoked some JackKnife for the first time in a while...and...I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would? Huh...rotting death, not quite. But something was missing.

I like Jackknife Plug, I don't find the DFK overwhelming in that blend. Other DFK blends I like are Seersucker, HU Soraya, Dark Moor and Manyara and Solani 660.

See, I like DFK a LOT. I used to smoke Drum cigarette tobacco all the time so my taste for it is pretty ingrained. Honestly I’ve never heard of those other blends save for 660...ill have to check them out.

On a more serious note than above, you should try Amphora Kentucky Blend. It’s even better than Old Dark Fired in my opinion.

Mine would be, in no particular order :

JackKnife
Bold Kentucky
1792/Lakeland Dark

I would replace 1792 with GHC Dark Flake, but my understanding is that the dark-fired leaf in that one is VA-seed instead of the standard KY. I like ODF plenty, but prefer Bold Kentucky which amps up the KY and tones down the vinegar a bit. I think jackKnife is wonderful and probably does the best job of bouncing the KY off of the VA base. A simple blend, but rich, satisfying and layered with delicious natural tobacco flavors.
