Seriously though, I like to read through The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings every three or four years. It's getting close to time for another read through. I've read The Silmarillion a couple of times. Might be time for another read through of that as well. Just great books, I have the four volume paperback set, plus a paper back copy of The Silmarillion, but my wife bought me leather bound copies of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings a couple years back and I added a hard bound copy of The Silmarillion as well. I'm looking forward to passing the hard copies on to my kids some day.

Absolutely.
I acquired a MacQueen estate pipe, and I will wrangle some of that Newminster Blackberry Brandy blend - seems Hobbit-like to me. The plan is to have a LOTR marathon movie day, with pipes and likely some action for my drinking horn... Then see the movie after my friends and I have recovered. I am entirely too excited.

I always liked the hobbit more than the LOTR (books that is). I was disappointed that the movie franchise didn't start with the hobbit. Can't wait!

The wife and I will definitely be there. I'm tempted to bring my churchwarden anyway.
On smoking in theaters: a prohibition of such did not stop 500 movie goers from smoking everything short of rice cakes during Beavis and Butthead Do America (god that was a long time ago). We should stand up for our rights!

I'm not overly keen on smoking while in a theatre, relighting would cause a distraction, I've taken other peoples phones for deciding to text during a movie so I'm thinking I would take lighters and matches as well.

A churchwarden smoke-in? I'm in! I got the illustrated version of the Hobbit when I was little. It was my first Tolkien book. Later I saw the animated version and then read all the LOTR books. I'll be sure to se the Hobbit movies, but I will probably be going alone. My wife doesn't care for long movies or Hobbits.

Me and the wife are going for sure. I go back through the Hobbit every year or so. And like some of you, I enjoy the Hobbit more than the LoTR books. Probably because I read the Hobbit when I was very young, and didn't read the LoTR books until I was about fifteen or so. However, I did not know that it was being released in parts. This makes me a sad big folk.

The Hobbit was the first book, short of 15 page children's books, I read on my own. I will absolutely see this movie. I hate to think I'm going to have to wait three years to see all three parts!

Yea that really bums me out that they're going to piece it through. But, that's part of the epic-ness. Patience is a virtue.

I'm in the process of re-reading the Hobbit before Part 1's release. I just got to the part with Beorn. How do you think they are going to break the movies down? I suspect Part 1 will end with the finding of the One Ring or the Warg council. What about the other 2 parts? I'm foggy on the rest of the book?

I was just talking about this with my cousin the other day. We loved the books, we loved the trilogy in movie form and we are super excited about this movie! We are actually going to line up at the midnight release over here in Toronto and I was saying to him that he should get a pipe and we should smoke our pipes while waiting in line! Which is what we are most likely going to do haha.

I will be waiting in line with both my poker style churchwardens. But I wonder.....will it be in 3D IMAX?
