D is bowl size.

It’s Marxman 400 number 213.

The Roman numerals mean the buyer has 25 pipes, stamped after the sale.
From what I’ve read- no.

My 400 is as big as they get. It is stamped B. There are no bigger 400s.

Marx made and sold over a thousand 400s. The Stamp is something I’ve only seen on Tate’s.

My 400 weighs in at 108 grams.

I don't know I have ones that are stamped C but have smaller bowls than the Bs. I also have an A that has the same size bowl as the Bs.

@Briar Lee , in talking with the Rev. the 400 was made well into the 1000s. While most 400s are big chunks, not so all of them. The serial number has two parts. The letter designation is denotes which run. The letter destination is the number in the series. Marx never advertised he only made 400. Remember, he was a marketing genius.

For what it’s worth—-

To make any Marxman

First the block is examined. They all came from the same bag.

Does it have pretty grain —-Super Briar

Most are nearly grainless.

Most Marx pipes were made with the bark on the side.

Drill a .775 inch hole—that’s an A

It might chip, get a bigger size drill- B

If it chips again let’s go .830” - C

They went .850” and .880” a lot, sometimes on pipes stamped B.

There really is not all that much difference between an A and a 400.

He’s likely right.

Never argue with a preacher with 14 $25 70 year old pipes.:)

How many wives dod he have?

None killed him before he retired in Arizona, so he’s made it almost to the finish line.

If A is 1937, then D is 1940.

While Spitfires and Messerschmitts dueled over the Tower of Big Ben over the continued existence of Christian Civilization that old German foreman at the Marx factory had approved 334 pipes that year.

If you don’t love these things, that leaves more for us to love.:)

If Dunhill had made 400s they’d sell for ten thousand each today.

In 1940 my father turned 21 and got two presents I know of.

From his beautiful Aunt Eva, who lived just down the road in her mansion, a custom made silver saddle that cost $200.

From his doting parents a $100 solid gold Hamilton and they traded in the 1936 four door Ford for a new red two door 1940 Ford with a chrome grill, another $500.

Had he smoked, my 400 was the most expensive factory pipe in the world in 1940.

These were heirlooms the year they were made.

They will be for all time yet to come.
