Thanks for asking this question! I have a meer bowl on a falcon that I have smoked about half a dozen times. I have noticed a slightly off flavor and wondered if it was meer specific but never made time to ask.

For some reason before I bought my meer I thought it was a magical material that would never ghost and would smoke neutral, thus giving me the best smoke ever.;)

Warm beeswax doesn’t smell like that. It’s the mineral since it’s leftover deposits of an ancient ocean.

Eeew...whatever. Images of the bottom of a fishtank are now ricocheting inside my skull.

I have never had any bad smells while smoking a new Meerschaum. A few of them though, when they were brand new would smell like burnt rubber AFTER a smoke, even when rested. I would not smell it in the next bowl though and it went away after 7-8 smokes
It seems to depend greatly on the meer.

I had wondered if that chalky seashell taste was from dust not washed away after manufacturing.

The beeswax aroma is from the wax they used to coat newly made pipes. Some guys will keep reapplying this also.

Was anyone able to answer the question about whether African Meers were the same material as the white ones? I had been wondering the same thing.

Meerschaum by definition is hydrated magnesium silicate, There are meerschaum deposits worldwide however few are commercially viable to mine. "African" meerschaum (mostly from the Laxley (sp) mines) is denser and darker than Turkish meerschaum. Most examples are "pre-colored" by fuming. Turkish meerschaum is more porous and will actually float on water. There was at some point meerschaum being mined in the Sudan that was closer to Turkish meerschaum in appearance and was used by EA Carey for their line of meerschaum pipes.

Ten years ago when I got my first new meerschaum pipe (most of mine have been purchased used) I remember sucking air through the pipe and thinking "this tastes just like a rock" - I have spent the ten years since then wondering how I knew what a rock tastes like...

+2 - I noticed a big difference after about a dozen or so bowls when new, which wasn't necessary with my estate Meer. My Altinay really muted the flavors when new and underwhelmed me, and it's an amazing smoker now.

Mind you I only have three meers or Meer-lined pipes so take it what that's worth.
yeah mine tasted muted at first too. Now it's great. It's a servi meerschaum if that means anything.

I saw Parliament back in the day. Sooooo much fun.

Interesting about the seashell. I can see that. I always felt like it added a creamy quality. Briars are black coffee, Meers have a touch of half and half.
I worked with an older gentleman who says he saw Funkadelic and Black Sabbath at the same show. I have to admit I was never before or since so struck by jealousy.
