A recent gift from our resident Sin City member (more on that later) prompted me to get out a couple of pipes I’d bought recently and start cleaning them up. These two early republic 307 system standards have got to be the most filthy pipes I have ever cleaned up. So far I’ve had ream the stem bores with drill bits remove the impacted gunk. I’m starting to think the stem might actually be a wash and I’ll need to make new ones. Even after reaming with twist drills I haven’t even put a dent in the gunk in the stems. The previous owner was clearly unaware of the existence of pipe cleaners… 😡View attachment 242484View attachment 242485View attachment 242486View attachment 242487View attachment 242488View attachment 242489View attachment 242491View attachment 242492View attachment 242493
Looks like one of the first estate pipes i bought that was "clean and ready to smoke", i went through 15-20 pipe cleaners just to get one to come out clean. But i enjoyed it, i slapped it around and called it a dirty girl while reaming it.

The last time those brushes were used was probably on a set of Amal MK1s 😂.
No more Amal's, but now SU HS4's.
Worst come to worst, at least you have the skills to make new stems for those.
I hope it would not come to that. @rusty - can you make new stems? (that's a skillset I do not possess, but I have a guy).

Those are some good lookin' pipes. Certainly worth the effort to make them smokeable again! How many pipe cleaners do you think you used? I feel like I go through probably 200 when I do the annual cleaning of my pipes. It just never ends! Or maybe I'm doing it wrong...

Once I realized pipe cleaners weren’t cutting it I stepped up to bore brushes. So I didn’t really end up using to many.
