Just something to keep in my mind regarding the perceived expense of pipes. Just as an example, if you spend $100 on a pipe and only smoke 25 bowls in it and never smoke it again, that's the equivalent of 25 $4 cigars...and pipe tobacco is so much cheaper than cigars it barely even figures in.
But pipes and pipe tobacco will likely never be as inexpensive and available in the future as they are right now, so get 'em while you can.

My opinion is that it's better to have a better stocked tobacco cellar, than pipe rack.
Try them tobaccos and ask ask ask here on the forums, I encourage you. There's a lot to like.

Yes, I can see your point. Yet, if you compare our costs to that of a cigarette smoker, we could buy a new quality pipe and 4 ounces of tobacco a month and easily out run em. My wife buys a carton every week, avg. about $200.oo a month roughly. My pipe collection if averaged out over 30 years would be 2 pipes a year at roughly $45

a pipe, plus maybe 2 lbs. of tobacco a year @ 4.00 an ounce (current prices), $128.00 a year, it would have cost me $224. dollars a year. Your math may vary, of course. And by the original statement, one $100.00 pipe is really all you ever need, then smoking for $128.00 a year is quite a bargain. I spend more money on stocking my cellar every month than what I smoke, hedging for the future.

Still havent spent more than my wife, btw, and I bought a $200.00 Peterson last Christmas.

Wish our prices in Canada matched those in the USA.

Don't want to scare you but OTC brands like Captain Black are approx. $10.00 an ounce here. I pay almost $19.00 for 50gram pouch which is approx 2oz.

Good way to look at it. The figures prove pipes can be a inexpensive passtime compared to other routes.

I agree with what you all have said. One of the reasons I switched to a pipe from nails was cost. Now that my wife is the only one that smokes nails (and it takes her like 3 days to a pack), and I'm no longer smoking a pack and a half a day. It's much cheaper. Pipes are IMHO the least expensive way to consume tobacco, and taste much better too.

The cost of my pipes, items that I use continuously in a rotation,

pales in comparison to this...

Speaking of tobacco, has everyone (USA) taken action on these bills yet?

Count me focusing toward a well-stocked cellar.

From a purely economic perspective, pipe tobacco falls into the category of supplies, a few pipes are utensils, but extended pipe purchases a luxury.

I also believe that it's better to have more tobacco than pipes, but overall pipes are way cheaper than any other form of smoking. I can't really afford to satisfy my PAD bug right now, but I'm still enjoying the pipes I've had in my collection for over 30 years, and they all still smoke great.

Yes, I also agree that having a decent stock of tobacco is the thing to focus on primarily. And my "example" was of course meant to be absurd in order to illustrate a point (point being that even if you buy a lot of pipes it's still not really any more expensive than cigar smoking). But no one would, or should, treat pipe purchases lightly, or treat pipes as disposable...that goes without saying for any serious pipe smoker.
But there is sort of a psychological phenomenon that tends to see pipe purchases as an expensive luxury, whereas when people spend as much or more on cigars or cigarettes it's perceived as somehow more acceptable.

How does one put a price on what makes you happy? If I like a pipe, I buy it. Same for tobacco, if I'm intrigued by a blend I read about here or on the review sites I buy it. If its a dud I usually leave it on the smoking bar at the B&M. Carpe diem. Enjoy.

Yes, of course, the fact that you still have the pipe as a thing of value, both monetarily and artistically, is all the more reason for the false perception...the cigars and cigarettes are just burned away. The only real difference is that the money spent on cigars and cigarettes is done a little at a time, whereas a pipe purchase may be a lot all at once...and therein lies the reason for the perceptions being as they are I believe.
