That dumbass test means some guys miss out a lot of great smoking bipes. But, to each his own.

Bent pipes predominantly of course. I've got a few that need a hook in the cleaner and more than one which require disassembly to move a clog. But, each one delivers on each and every bowl full.

How does one test if the tenon is a tight fit against the bottom of the mortise?

1. Carefully clamp the pipe bowl in a vise. You may want to protect the sides of the bowl by placing a layer of felt between the bowl and the vise.

2. Choose a suitably large mallet.

3. After taking a couple of practice swings, smack the slot side of the button dead on, which will drive the stem toward the shank.

4. If the stem snaps, and/or the shank shatters, the tenon was probably a tight fit against the back of the mortise.

All else being equal I'd prefer a pipe that passes a cleaner easily, however just because it does is not a guarantee that it's a good smoker. None of my OOM Pauls pass a cleaner, nor most of my Petersons, yet they smoke great. I've never had much luck passing a cleaner on a Peterson with a P-lip unless I use those very thin and useless Falcon pipe cleaners.
