There's a lot of great shell finishes there for sure. I see that many of the photos are from the John Loring Collection. Some of the finest specimens of Dunhill pipes ever made. Those old shells don't come easy anymore and command many $$ to add into a collection but what great blasts and smoking quality. Thanks for the many pictures.

Arno,

that's a wonderful post, thank you!

voorhees,

cool man, thanks for adding your pipe you lucky duck!

Those early birds are few 'n far to be found!
That quite a few of the pipes in this thread came from John Loring is simply inescapable, not only was he a sophisticated curator of a very fine collection, but he shared his knowledge openly with everyone and we are indebted to his mighty scholarship.
2 of the pipes in this thread come from PM members...
...that krazykool kapnismologist, Kashmir

...and he of the cadillaciac collection, Cumberland

@misterlowercase, another fantastic piece. I can add a 1926 and a 1940 to fill a couple of gaps. My friend is coming at the weekend to get me acquainted with posting pics. Mine are not as shiny as those - I will polish them!!

Thanks for posting that! Beautiful! That is one heck of a collection! I have a few Dunnies my self, but nothing like that! Was enjoying my 2001 Cumberland Billard on the way to work today!
Congrats and thanks for sharing!
Best
Bob

Beautiful, beautiful pics! Normally, I don't go in for rusticated pipes, because they remind me of a turd, but those are as far away from "cover-up" rustication as an eagle is from a starling. Great work as always, misterlowercase.

I'm less like a historian and more like an over-enthusiastic little kid, bouncing around all over the place and picking up postcards along the way. I never knew such a vast and fertile world existed and now it holds my endless fascination, it's been a little over 2 years now that I've been with pipe and I'm still excited about it all, literally learning something new every day!
These early Shells always command high prices, like this example:

ENGLISH ESTATE PIPE: DUNHILL 7 SHELL PATENT 1926
...but the wonderful thing is how a nice Shell can pop out from someones attic and be had for a very fair price, like this one, it looks pretty early and it's got a great blast, and it's funny how the White Spot sometimes isn't understood by non-pipe folks, the Spot is upside down LOL, this pipe isn't mine sadly, I would have jumped outta my skin if I had saw it with that buy-it-now price!

Dunhill estate pipe Shell Briar
The production numbers for the Shell pipes have been pretty high throughout all the years I reckon, making the chances of getting one for a song even better...
