Hi guys,

New guy here please forgive if this has been posted asked or raised previously as I know its been a fairly pressing thought for most of In these past few years - but how likely is ot that well see the eventual disappearance of our chosen tobacco? I love in the UK and don't parturition see any sign of that being the case but should I be stocking up to the rafters or does anyone who knows anything surrounding this think ill be safe to take each day as it comes in regards to buying pipe tobacco?

Many thanks,

Chooch.

"I love in the UK and don't parturition see any sign of that being the case..."

Not sure how parturition comes into this (it means childbirth) but regards tobacco, the general opinion is to cellar deep, or at least as deep as your purse will allow.

Tobacco will never be any cheaper than it is now, that's not to say it's cheap, it isn't. Also, there will come a time when it will be nigh on impossible to buy.

Which part of the UK do you call home?

Regards,

Jay.

You're joking, right? We've lost loads of tobaccos in the Uk this year. Lots of the Mac Baren and Rattray's blends are no longer available in the UK. I'm guessing it's BREXIT related so might get sorted out in the future but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Then there's Germain's which sells out as soon as it comes into stock. I bought some Germain's Brown Flake less than 4 years ago for £14.89 a pouch. Today, that same tobacco costs upwards of £20, and that's if you can get your hands on some.

If you like a blend you should definitely stock up on it. I wish I had done that more with Warrior plug.

the likely hood of your favorite tobacco disappearing is 100 percent. The chances of it happening in your lifetime uncomfortably good. There is the chance their supply of the kind of leaf they need to make it what it is becomes unobtainable to them. The company could choose to pack up and move to Aruba to teach people how to scuba dive. The cost to profit ratio could easily become undesirable to the company. Basically it's best to look at all pipe tobacco as limited edition. It could also remain as is for generations as well. But there are so many little factors that go into it getting to market and to you, And those little factors are critical. I think the bottom line isn't how likely is it that it could go away as much as how would you deal with it if it did? I personally don't like any pipe tobacco that much more then the others that I couldn't move on and try to find another new favorite. But if you feel like you'd be really missing out and all that then stock up some.

There is now only one manufacturer of pipe tobacco in the UK (Gawith Hoggarth & Co.). Two if you include the Isle of Jersey (J. F. Germain). It's not a growing industry. Plan accordingly!

If you have only one or several blends that you smoke, and you have been smoking for a while so you feel your tastes are established, cellaring fairly deeply is probably warranted.

If you favorites come from a small blender, or if there is any doubt about a particular blend being continued by the blender, that would be another reason to cellar more deeply.

A number of members have admitted that they probably have enough tobacco to carry them through their 200th birthday, so they have probably overdone it.

I'm a moderate smoker, and I don't intentionally cellar for years ahead, but even so, I buy only a few tins, baggies, or pouches, and the occasionally larger tin or tub, and it accumulates far more than I smoke. So I feel no urgency on that. Also, I have a fairly wide range of taste, so I could enjoy the variety I have for many moons.

Some people want hundreds of pounds of tobacco, and others are comfortable with a shelf full. Some people are in nations or areas where tobacco sales are restrictive and/or diminishing, so you have to take that into account.

I'd say, a little cellaring is a good thing. When you start cellaring really deep, make an assessment and see if you want more. You may enjoy trying a new blend now and then, so leave room for that. When storage becomes a problem, that's a hint you are buying too much.

Better to be prepared and not need it, than to need it and not be prepared.

I was cellaring hard to get stuff in my early pipesmoking, so I was setting back stuff as it would become available. While my favorite every day smoke was McClellands. I mean, I had some McClellands set back when they went tits up. But, I was caught pants down, without a lifetime supply, because I just never saw a future without a McClelland's. So, I ended up having to drive around the entire Southeast US buying it all up as fast I could. I won't get caught like that again.

Preach, brother!

McClelland Navy Cavendish is my favorite blend, and while I have a decent stash of it, I have to treat as a special occasion smoke to stretch it out. I have more Christmas Cheer than NC, and I’d happily trade the one for the other. Well….maybe not all of it.

I keep thinking I need a couple of Virginia tobacco plants in the garden for insurance and as an added facet of the hobby. Never quite do it though…

Years ago I heard your first sentence used referring to firearms. I took it seriously then and I take it seriously now concerning tobacco.

Stock up while you can. Some cases in point:

My morning 40-minute commute to work was almost always accompanied by a bowl of Blackwoods flake for many years, before I knew about this forum or any online pipe smoking resources.

I also really enjoyed sitting with a bowl of Butera's Kingfisher in the evenings.

Back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, both of these blends and many more blends now considered unicorns and mastodons were almost constantly in stock at my local B&M shop, and I never stocked up more than one tin of each blend I enjoyed. When I was out, I could swing by and pick up just about whatever McClelland, Esoterica, Butera, or Sam Gawith blend I enjoyed.

Some of my favorites went belly up just within the past couple of years. Luckily I bought much of it while I could, but every so often I find that a blend has been discontinued.

I just recently found out lane limited ready rubbed is discontinued after trying to buy another tub.
