Did anyone catch the 60 Minutes a couple weeks ago called "Survival of the Friendliest"? It counters the argument of survival of the fittest. Dogs may have developed a gene that made them more friendly, seeking companionship with humans to survive. What's just as interesting is that the gene they located that explains this friendliness is also in humans. It's a shared gene that is exemplified in a human developmental disability. It's complicated. I won't do it justice trying to explain it. More great stuff about the shared history of humans and dogs.

Sounds really cool! I watched a different show about how domestic dogs are the descendants of wolves that may have been weaker and relied on scavenging to supplement their diet. Spending time around the outskirts of human settlements led to the increasing relationship and eventual domestication of dogs.

Equal parts entertaining and scary is realizing that all dogs are the same species, from teacup Chihuahuas to English Mastiffs.

That's a size range around 50 to 1. (More than 300 to 1 for the "record" smallest and largest examples)

Nothing else like it in nature. Many species of birds, for example, are difficult to tell apart without close inspection.

Meaning a pug dog wearing a clown hat has more in common with a seven-foot-long Irish Wolfhound than these two identical-looking birds do:

Oh yeah... what defines a species? They can reproduce. (don't think about that too much though, or your brain will hurt)

Many years ago I heard or read somewhere there is supposedly a Native American creation myth (don't recall which tribe) which states when God was creating a gulf to separate man from the animals the dog jumped over at the last moment to be with man.

All dogs are dogs but there's no such thing as a fish.

And this guy Darwin jumped over in the opposite direction. I mean, it balances the equation. 😏
