Well, I had to get one. PAD I guess. :)
Rattray Old Perth. Sav 313 GDO for size comparison.

Simon,
I always enjoy seeing photos from your collection! You are to be commended for putting together such!
I lean towards the heel being a heat sink on the bowl of a clay or meerschaum pipe; not as important on the briar version. Seems the heel is awful small to serve as a handle.

@johnnyreb they act on the larger ones as a handle but also as a heat sink since the moister underneath collects and turns the 'foot' yellow over time. Most seem to be a two tone color due to the use of either a silver three penny piece or button placed at the bottom of the bowl. The same effect can be achieved with a coloring bowl which I think is a form of cheating as I always use a silver three penny bit on my pipes.

I love my cutty. It has turned into a great smoker for me. Gets a bit hot due to thin walls, but the foot gives it a great feel in the hand. Definitely a more old school, antique aesthetic, but I like that.

Lonestar, your creations are gorgeous.
The grain on the first one really floats my boat, while the proportions and blast on the second are absolutley spot on.
Beautiful
