I recently received a Wizard and it is a very fine smoker indeed. Unfortunately the whole churchwarden thing may not be for me because, in this case at least, the long stem renders it un-clenchable. So not a hands-free proposition which is irksome. The bowl is not all that heavy for it's large size but with nearly a foot of leverage clenchability is poor. Too bad. That bowl is an excellent device for turning tobacco into smoke.
You managed to look at the Missouri Meerschaum website and only order one pipe?

They are worth the wait, believe me. I have two Shires because one is smoked virtually evey day. But I'm not that familiar with regular smoking of cobs--is dark burning on the bowl surface typical?
I picked up a wizard and man that thing is hefty. I love it. Produces a smooth, cool smoke, but it's kind of awkward to light. Especially if the baccy goes out and you need a relight towards the end of the bowl. Kind of want to grab a shire and see how that one is...
Ok, I just pulled the trigger on a "Shire". I've never smoked a cob before. We'll see how it goes. I actually have high expectations based on what I've read from other cob smokers.
Any particular type of tobacco I should initiate it with? I was thinking something with latakia. Maybe that's a bad choice. I don't know.

I have a question regarding the MM cobs. Please excuse me if this has already been answered in the thread but why do I read about so many people replacing the stock stem with a "forever stem" from another producer? What the downside with the MM original stems?

People use Forever Stems for a few reasons I suspect. They don't like the look and feel of the bit; it looks cheap. The original plastic bit is easy to chew up if you clench the pipe with force. The bend in the bent pipes is too drastic, and thus difficult to pass a pipe cleaner through. Lastly, most people smoke a cob without a filter leaving a wide open draw. A forever stem reduces this draw back to normal, as well as making the pipe unfiltered.
The forever stems come in either Acrylic or vulcanite. I still use the original, they clench well and at only 50 cents each, keeping a few spare on hand is easy on the wallet.
The Cobbit Shire came with a very comfortable vulcanite stem. I loved this pipe immediately. It loaded up very easily with a nice decent sized chamber.
But, back to the stem. Upon first inspection, I put my hands on stem and shank to check the innards and do a complete inspection, but I found that with quite a lot of force, this stem wasn't budging.
Here's a long story short.
If you get a Cobbit and look at where the stem goes into the shank, look for little 'ribs' of what I'll call excess material. It appears (if you have it) on the opposing sides of the stem and looks like excess material from molding the stem. I'm guessing some kind of two piece mold. Anyway...twisting the stem to remove it is folly.
Better to gently wiggle the stem up and down and try to work it out..and if it's still resistant, a little candle heat will help.
I learned the hard way, but when I told Marilyn about my experience, she sent me another stem.

There are cobs that accept filters, and cobs that don't. You seem to get a different draw if you use the filter ones w/o a filter. Cobbits don't have filters. Their draw is quite smooth and easy.
