you ever seen a killer whale eat a trainer? Now that's entertainment!

I would be willing to pay good money to see that. As long as they don't beat around the bush about it. I want to pay my money, walk in, set down, and only have to wait less than 15 minutes to see the good parts. And, make it even better with multiple victims. Give the whales some choices. Maybe let us take bets on who will get eaten first. Oooooo, make old out of date celebrities do it.

For me, it is the mix of emotions in the make up and the real emotions on their faces. Some can just see the make-up, but I can see the evil hatred and disgust that the clowns wear. They are freakin' evil, and I just don't care for them.

What is so funny about them? I mean, does watching a clown really make you laugh? Really?

You're a cruel, cruel man, Michael. Do you have any idea how bad old, out-of-date celebrities taste?

Cosmic, all is see is the goofy makeup and their silly antics.
I seriously don't understand the "evil hatred and disgust".
I guess that's why Baskin-Robbins sells more than just vanilla.

I've seen good clown crews that did the physical comedy with a lot of humor and art, great timing and no creepiness at all. I have seen some professional clowns and amateurs who were trying to be supposedly jolly that just looked like they were using it as a platform to get attention. You always worry that they might be using it to get access to children. Usually women clowns are less prone to creepy than male clowns. Rodeo clowns can be downright heroic -- it's dangerous. But yes, there is a subset of clowns that should be closely monitored and generally discouraged.

For myself, it is not a fear, rather an innate distrust and deep desire to do them bodily harm. Their anonymity comes across as a ruse, thus inviting me to fill in the blanks as to why they don't want their identity known. They are a walking Rorschach test. I used to watch Bozo the Clown as a child and it often times became a depressing site, so I stopped watching. Later, movies like Killer Clowns From Outer Space were a lark and nice diversion. Nowadays, the drug fueled antics of Juggalos, and the truly frightening prosthetics and masks available have shifted the genre away from face paint and child's entertainment to something more menacing and palpably disturbing. I didn't find Stephen King's "It" scary. A guy walking the neighborhood with a clown mask, outfit, and axe bugs me and sends up red flags.
That said, I hope sideshows and smaller troupes find a way to continue their profession in this Pokemon stricken world.

Interesting. I not only enjoyed watching the Bozo the Clown show I was actually on one of them. I never felt creeper out. Having said that, I'm not into horror movie clowns and things of that nature but we're talking about CIRCUS clowns.
Oh well.

I'm so old that Clarabelle on Buffalo Bob (?) is my picture of a clown. And Red Skelton- on the Sullivan show, IIRC.
Don't go in for creepy movies, clowns or not.

Clowns are supposed to be funny and the good ones are. As a kid, all the children loved clowns and I don't think there was any such thing as a scary one. Things were not yet that sick. I've seen clowns live and on TV that were hilarious! A lot depends on the individual, their act, and the make-up is supposed to take advantage of their natural features and face in some humorous way that fits their routine. It is an art getting the right look and no two are supposed to be the same. But in the end, starve a trade and naturally like anything else, it will probably suffer. In the end, people make out of it whatever it is they expect or want to see.
