I usually employ the char light method.
OK buddy, turn in your pipe smoker's ID card immediately! Follow the rules, or don't participate!

I normally char light and then true light. However I nearly always need to relight after emptying the ash about the half way point. I'm still working on one true light and no relights, still I'm a lot better since reading about proper technique here on the forum. Many thanks to all the good advice I get here. :puffy:

I like the ritual of the false light, even if I don't need one (although I always need one.) It does give me a nice even burn throughout the bowl. Of course with a few tamps in between.
