While the address may say Birmingham, The Briary is actually in Homewood which is like a suburb of Birmingham. When I'm traveling though that part of Alabama, I try to schedule it so I can overnight in Homewood and include a couple of hours at the shop. It's been two years since I've been there but Skip always has a good selection of pipes and pipe tobacco.

I ask this nearly every time The Briary comes up, so I'll ask again: has anyone had their "Ephemeris" house blend that can give any tasting notes/review? They don't provide any details other than it's a virginia blend, and given the price, I don't want to blind buy, but I can't find anything about it on TR or elsewhere.

I have only ever had samples of Ephemeris, or any of the jarred blends that started to sell the last few years. I don't have an in-depth account, but I do know that this is a blend of Sutliff products. It's no secret, as it is on the label and their website. I have no idea where they will source new leaf, since Sutliff is no more.... but, if you love Sutliff Virginias, you might like this, but if you are looking for... something more original, you might be let down.

I'm sorry that I can't give more information on this. I suggest giving it a try. It is a great shop, and they work with their suppliers to get very unique things from time to time. One thing I can suggest is that if you like corporate Virginias, you're probably not going to be disappointed.

Whether this is a repackaged bulk Sutliff VA Slaces... I am not the best at sussing that out, because I have not had the Sutliff VA Slices. But, I have had PS Navy Flakes, ha! Make of that what you will.

We were at a baseball tournament a couple weeks ago in Birmingham and I was able to quickly stop by. I had been there before, years ago, and not much has changed. A fantastic shop with a great collection of pipes and a very good tobacco collection too. Squeaky floors, a lounge, a great place to spend some time trying a new blend and chatting with the locals. Very highly recommended. I have never mail ordered from them, but I would. I grabbed two tins of Wessex Campaign Dark Flake which is difficult to find.
