The Lower Forty of Hill Country
Mr. Ehwa married his wife, Mary, in 1967. At the time he was working for Fred DIebel, a tobacconist and pipe-maker in Kansas City, Missouri. Mr. Ehwa was so passionate and knowledgeable about pipes and tobaccos that, in 1971, he and Mary wrote "The Book of Pipes and Tobaccos," It was published in 1974

Mr. Ehwa was so successful in creating a number of tobacco blends for Mr. Diebel that, in 1977, he, Mary, and a gentleman named Bob Berish, Jr. (a childhood best friend of Carl's) founded the McClelland Tobacco Company, named for Mr. Ehwa's grandfather, Dr. W.C. McClelland. The business was located in the basement of the McClelland home. In 1980 Mike McNiel joined the business, replacing Mr. Berish, Jr. Mike had worked at Diebel's with Carl.

In 1982, at the age of 36, Mr. Ehwa suffered a cerebrovascular event that completely changed his personality. He lost all interest in pipes and tobaccos, the business, and, sadly, his wife. He wandered away, leaving Mary, Mike, and three others to carry on, and passed away at the age of 50.

In 1993 Mike and Mary were married. Together they built McClelland into a powerhouse that survived for 40-years, but shuttered the business in 2018 due to their advancing age and sad changes in the tobacco business.

Here's a link to the citation for the McClelland Tobacco Company on the pipedia.org Website where you may read the entire history of the company.
